Best self-defense tool

My Dad asked me to look into buying some mace or pepper spray for him as there have been some daylight muggings around where he works in downtown Buffalo, NY. Being as it is 2010 I am thinking there have probably been some serious developments in deterrents for a mugging or rape attack(also looking to get something for my sister as she rides her bike to get around.)

Anyone with some knowledge on the subject have a recommendation?

Personally I would feel better using a stunner to incapacitate an **** that attacked me, drop that evil to the ground spasming. I know that regular strength pepper spray will NOT deter EVERY attacker, especially a drug crazed rapist. I have read about certain State Trooper's carrying a normal spray, and if that fails a backup Bear Deterrent Spray that will cause serious possibly permanent damage and definitely require hospitilization.

In summary, are stun guns and pepper sprays the only tools to stop an attacker? What about insanely loud, piercing sirens the size of a key chain? What is the easiest most effective deterrent to use? Right now I'm thinking learn how to use a stun gun as that will drop the attacker immediately and make retaliation physically impossible, whereas a normal human pepper spray can just enrage a crazed attacker even more and not prevent them from robbing, raping, or killing you.

Guns as concealed weapons aren't legal in every state or country guys. Check out the laws before you go buying these things. You could end up getting into more trouble than the attacker if you aren't careful.

As for protection, a taser, stun gun, mace, pepper spray, gun, or even a retractable baton are great options if you can get them.

You can't have a taser in New York. It's illegal.

I know, it's ridiculous. My theory is that the state wants you to die if you ever get attacked.

Your best bet is pepper-spray. Your second best bet is to learn some self-defense.

A foldable baton is a way to go.

ASP batons are also illegal in New York. Pretty much anything created to do harm, no matter how insignificant, is illegal in New York.

Seriously, the best advice I can give you is go take a self-defense course. A course specializing in self-defense, not karate or tae kwon do or something like that.

Krav Maga is a very good place to start.

I have a mix of pepper spray and mace that I carried around when I was down in California. Luckily, I never had to use it, but the fact that I had it out may have possibly deterred this guy who stalked me one night. I dunno. Sorry I can't be more helpful. :/

Well if your getting mugged chances are you wouldnt know it until the guys has his hand in your bag and a knife to your throat, in which case nothing will help other than defensive tactic martial arts. But to be safe some OC spray or Mace would be fine if he knows how to use it, maybe get it at a sporting goods store or gun store i think.Montaya

I honestly think it's a policy to make the Police heavily relied upon instead of having individuals take care of themselves.

We can't be everywhere at once, so I don't see the problem in letting people carry personal defense weapons so long as they have permits and some sort of training for them.

Nice pistol, but it's almost impossible to get a conceal to carry permit in NY. Unless your job requires you to have a piece.
