Hey guys,

I've got an assignment to do where I have to pick a song protesting Vietnam War and compare it to a war poem. So I was wondering what are some of the best Vietnam War Songs. I'd like to pick something from The Beatles, Bob Dylan or Jimi Hendrix but nothing comes to mind, so any suggestions would be good :D

Funny you say that, I was just listening to that song. But I can't see how the lyrics relate to the war.

Not really a protest song, but great indeed.

They relate to America's situation as a whole during the 60s...oh but if you want a more direct song I suggest you check out Born in the USA.

Hollies - He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother

In the Year 2525 Sorry, I can't think of the artist.

Paper Lace - Billy Don't Be A Hero

It's surprising how many protest songs I listen to considering my hawkish ways :P

Yeah, I don't think it was a protest song. The original version is by Bob Dylan, and during that time his last intention was to write a protest song. John Wesley Harding was more focused on religous references and story telling than his earlier career of protest. I think this song has to do with the similarity of life's difficulties between all types of men.

I'm gonna keep going because I'm bored:

Buffalo Springfield - For What It's Worth

CCR - Fortunate Son

Bob Dylan - Blowin' in the Wind

And of course, the old classic...

Not really a protest song, but great indeed.

Are you kidding me? "Not really a protest song"?

"Some folks are born made to wave the flag,
Ooh, theyre red, white and blue.
And when the band plays hail to the chief,
Ooh, they point the cannon at you, lord,"

"It aint me, it aint me, I aint no senators son, son.
It aint me, it aint me; I aint no fortunate one, no,"

"
Some folks inherit star spangled eyes,
Ooh, they send you down to war, lord,
And when you ask them, how much should we give?
Ooh, they only answer more! more! more! yoh,"

Hell, the whole thing is a protest against the Vietnam War. The "fortunate son" refers to those who got out of the draft because of connections, either political or economical.

Fortunate Son is a protest song. It's just about war in general. The rich kids get to buy their way out of the armed services while the laborers and kids from lower class families go off to fight so the wealthy can keep their luxuries. So the message is... without wealth you will always be someone else's n word.
