If you have one meal a day, your body goes into "OMG GONNA DIE" mode and stores as much fat as it can get from your meals. Eat a balanced diet and work out.

I literally cant comprehend what people have such a hard time with the concept of EXERCISE AND DIET. You eat less, or healthier foods and you run or do light workouts everyday you'll lose weight.

I would say exercise with three healthy meals. I don't think losing weight through strictly eating a certain way is the best option. Plus exercise gets you into shape.

It's just hard stickin' to something when you don't see results right away, so I want to do what's best and what I know will work. When I google how to lose weight, hundreds of different ways come up and it's a little overwhelming. I think I'll stick to the simple eat less/exercise more thing. No need to jump on me or be condescending.

Eating one meal a day is unhealthy, and as a fellow female I will tell you it'll mess up your system and can make you feel like crap. Instead, you need to portion control. Figure out what a healthy portion of food looks like. A serving of chicken is something like 3 ounces, which is the size of a deck of cards, not a massive chicken breast the size of two of your hands, which is what most of us eat. A serving of pasta is not an entire plateful, either. Keep your portions small and eat small meals frequently throughout the day, and exercise of course.

Burn more calories than you ingest.

Loosing weight is not rocket science. It just takes a little determination and the ability to break bad habits.

Find your daily maintenance calories, how many callories you can eat without gaining weight .Then subtract 500 caloriess from your daily diet and do some form of exercising you enjoy for at least 30 minutes a day .

Working out is the hardest part for me :p I do stretches and squats before I go to bed.. that's all. I need to go on an hour bike ride/walk every day. The weather is so crappy out, though. I need a treadmill!

I don't know if it's necessarily about eating less and exercising. If you're exercising a lot you will need to eat correctly too.

I was being condescending because I HATE when people complain that they don't see results right away, are you expecting to lose 5kg the first day? It's the same deal with putting on weight (what I am trying to do now) It's a slow process (working out, eating a lot, protein shakes) but I set myself a goal by the end of the year and I plan to reach it. Everyday is a challenge, meet it

Eating one meal a day will only keep you full for so long. You'll eventually get really hungry and that increases the chances of binge eating which destroys your diet. Like many people are saying it's best to eat three meals a day. Or 5-6 smaller meals, whatever works for you. The biggest thing for weight loss is reaching a calorie deficit.

Eating one meal a day is probably the worst thing you could do. It only slows down your metabolism because you're not feeding your body with energy. Eat 4-5 small meals/snacks a day, starting with your biggest meal at the start of the day and your smallest for your last meal. You should do cardio first thing in the morning instead of at night.

truthfully ive come to learn that all of these "amazing diets" you see in magazines telling you that you can lose 20 pounds a month by following a specific schedule and eating habits might work but what most sensible people will tell you is that proper diet and exercise work the best, i know this for a fact, there is no huge secret, there is proper diet and exercise and then there is people trying to make money off of people who want to lose weight, that is all

Any drastic change in your diet can really screw your insides up. Just eating fruits and veggies won't really work because you'll lack tons of nutrients you need that you can't get from them alone, and that can make you sick and even grumpier. You need certain vitamins or your body isn't going to function properly, your period could just stop, or you could start feeling physically shaky, sick or fatigued. Whatever you decide, I'd take a multivitamin with it and if possible talk to a doctor, because it sounds like you have health concerns that are contributing to you wanting to lose some weight. Basically since I've seen pictures of you and you're not fat or anything and you don't need to lose a large amount of weight (like 100 lbs), what I think you should do is just portion control, not eat very much junk food (chips, cookies) and not worry too much about calories. Avoid things you know are loaded with fat and grossness like pre-packaged or processed foods and make as much as you can from scratch. Eat a little bit of everything and don't cut anything out completely. If you're anything like me, a fruit and veggie diet won't work because you'll get the urge to dip stuff or add flavor to its' ucky blandness and pretty soon you have a 200 calorie meal plus another 300 worth of sauce and flavorings, so you'd be no better off than if you'd eaten some a piece of fish with lemon juice over it and half the veggies, except with that you get more nutrients and a less boring meal Treat yourself to things like candy, but don't eat a king size snickers bar, eat a fun sized one. Don't deprive yourself, that's where girls go wrong with diets. Focus less on calories and more on making things yourself, don't eat stuff that comes in a box or bag or out of the freezer. ALSO, replace all your beverages except for a cup or two a day of milk with water. The more water, the better. No calories and you stay hydrated and feel fuller longer.

I don't think you have to limit how much you eat, just what you are eating. Anyway, cardio excercises I believe are the best for weight loss. Also, I wouldn't worry about dieting and all that. Toning excercises can also help you look slimmer and you get visual results from toning excercises quicker as well. If you are consistent, eating smart (junk every now and then but not everyday) and consistently excercising should do the trick.

Calories in=Calories out, eat less calories than you need and you'll lose weight. The reason one meal a day works for some people is one big meal will tend to make you full before you reach your calorie limit; eating one 1800 calorie (or whatever) is harder than eating 3, 600 calorie meals spread out, since more food is going in your stomach at once. If you ask me, get some cardio 3-4 times a week for 30-45 minutes, and eat at your maintenance calories (the cardio will put you in a deficit, thus weight loss, yet you don't have to eat less), how you eat your meals is up to you, just as long as you're creating that deficit by the end of the day.

Edit: Eating just fruits and veggies is a bad idea (like someone pointed out already), you won't be getting essential vitamins/mineral that you get from other foods. You're in for some crazy bloating and digestive discomfort, just remember fruits and veggies have calories as well. Eating 1800 calories of veggies is the same as 1800 calories of twinkies from a weightloss stand point.

it is hard initially, and physically itll take a good long while before you yourself can see the results, i know for me when i lost a lot of weight everyone had to tell me that i looked noticeably different before i actually went back and looked at a picture and realized how far i came, proper diet and exericise do work, i promise you that, though you might not see the changes physically one of the best ways to tell if youve lost weight are by the scale, thats how i kept myself going, i thought i wasnt looking different but every week i weighed less and less. it does get easier as you go, ill tell you that much, there are days where youll feel like not going out and running or exericising but at that point you need a source of motivation to keep you going, i found mine from a movie oddly enough :P you have to find your own motivation, your own drive, once you find that you should hold on to it, weather its a picture, a self image of what you want to be, someone in your life, whatever it may be, that inspiration should be able to drive you on the days where you feel like having a bag of chips or like not exercising. it can be hard, believe me, but in the end, you will be happier

It's very simple: Calories taken in must be smaller than calories used up daily. Which basically means good nutritious food( A diet with consists of all essential vitamins and minerals plus enough protein, fat and carbs), exercise (try starting off with 15-30 min walks, at an easy but somewhat faster than normal pace) and determination/discipline. You can build your exercise regime from there as you get more comfortable with it and you should also try to get 3 meals a day not 1 if you do you are telling your body it is in starvation mode which is detrimental to your desired goal. Grazing is better than once a day gorging.

One meal a day? Are you insane?

first, you need to eat at the very least 3 meals a day, some would even say 5-6 small meals or your metabolism is going to slow down and you won't lose any weight, you're fat will stick on you and even if you do manage to lose it, it'll just come back the moment you start eating a lot again. First find out your height and weight, secondly find out how many calories your body burns per day, use this

Thirdly, eat around 500 calories below your maintenance level. You can do more if you want to, but if you're trying to retain muscle then I wouldn't suggest going over 500. Fourthly, you need to commit at least a hour a day, 5 days a week to exercising. I'd suggest doing a lot of cardio with some medium lifting and a lot of exercises that focus on your core. The big three that come to mind for lifting is, bench press, deadlift and squats. You'll want to throw in some curls and shoulder exercises.

Lifting contributes a lot to weight loss, you won't pack on much size if you're not eating a lot and it'll help shape your body so it's very good for weight loss. Try to aim for a 1-2lb loss per week, if you're quite a bit overweight then you'll probably lose weight a lot faster but it'll slow down overtime. If you aren't going to dedicate anytime to exercising then you're going to be turning a big ball into a small ball. You need to lift and do cardio to tone up.

1.Snacks 5-6 snacks a day instead of 3 meals 2.low carbs-try the low carb diet, not no carb diet, you need carbs in order to work out, switch from anything white and sourdough to whole grain inc pasta 3.workout 30min-1hr a day 4.when you work out you wanna lose weight faster always do cardio, running biking high intesity is the easiet way to lose weight 5.no soda- you would be suprised how much this is a problem in gaining/losing weight 6. DO NOT starve yourself you end up just eating more your next sitting watch what you eat is the easiest way to lose weight

I call absolute BS on your first statement, you're body isn't going to go into starvation mode in one day. And the whole 5-6 meals a day to boost you metabolism isn't true, any boost you get from it will be minimal to none. Your fat isn't going to "stick" to you just because you go a period of less than 24 hours without food (now if your going multiple days with no food or on a drastic cut that's a different story). Any visible weight gain in a matter of less than a day would be water weight (thus the reason you look more defined in the morning). If you don't believe me, look up the warrior diet, which is based around 1 meal a day, works great for a lot of people who are on a cut.

Just wanted to point out that you guys are incorrect, at least from what I know. Many people with bulimia (binging and purging) actually end up just maintaining their weight, and many actually gain weight in the long run of it (you can't purge 100% of what you eat, some nutrients are already absorbed), unless they combine it with components of anorexia.

So no, bulimia does not work quite well. Anorexia on the other hand...

One meal a day? Are you insane?

first, you need to eat at the very least 3 meals a day, some would even say 5-6 small meals or your metabolism is going to slow down and you won't lose any weight. You're body will go into starvation mode, your fat will stick on you and even if you do manage to lose it, it'll just come back the moment you start eating a lot again.

To support your statement I've also read that that is myth. The best bet for someone trying to improve their diet in order to lose weight is just to stick with 3 balanced meals a day.

Everyone is saying eat 5-6 mini meals instead of 3 meals?
There's this poster in my kitchen my dad put up that busts dieting myths, and it specifically says "It's better to eat six mini meals than three squares: INCORRECT"

Eating one meal a day is flat out bad for you and you will see way faster gains by eating small meals in high quantities because of the effects it has on your metabolism. I also never stated once that your body would go directly straight into starvation mode within one day. Our bodies are built for survival, and when we aren't getting enough calories weight loss is harder to achieve. Your metabolism will slow down.

Also I agree, weight gain in less then a day is water weight. Losing 1-2lb's per week is healthy though.

3 healthy meals a day with exercise is the best way to go.

I think you made it abundantly clear in your opening post that your father has absolutely no idea what he is talking about when it comes to weight loss

[QUOTE="hippiesanta"][QUOTE="cybrcatter"]I hear bulimia works quite well. CammiTac

agree...LOL ...I did this for the sake of my job that require good looks........ and it works hahahahahaha

Anorexia on the other hand...

those are completely different. You can be fat and bulimic. You cant be fat and anorexic

Exercise every day, and eat a balanced diet. Just don't overdo it, and you'll be fine. Oh, and like everyone else has said, starving yourself like that is awful for yourself. The only people who I've seen that actually had to starve themselves are wrestlers.

How is one meal a day flat out bad for you? It's been proven 5-6 meals a day provides negligible effects on metabolism. I'm not saying that 5-6 meals a day is bad, but everyones body is different, for some people 1 meal a day works best, for other it is 5-6, and 2-3, etc But at the end of the day it is calories in=calories out for weight loss, 1800 calories in 5 or 6 meals is the same as 1800 calories in one meal in the same time span (lets say 24 hours). Honestly go to the body building forum, there are tons of people, each having there own meal and workout plan that is giving them great results and some not so great results.

Drink a lot of water. A LOT of water. Don't ingest any soft drinks or crap like that. Just water, and the odd fruit juice to give you some vitamin C so you don't get scurvy. Get some regular exercise. Cardio. Not too difficult to do. Cut down on sodium and sugar intake. Eat more raw food. Don't eat snack food a lot. Pretty easy. Cut down your portion size, but eat at least 3 times a day. 3 meals, or 5 moderate snacks. There. Get to it! :D

It depends on the person. For me, I often forget to eat, so if I can keep a schedule that forces me to be reminded that I need something to eat, I won't miss out. Where, when I was trying for 3 meals a day, I'd often forget one, or sometimes two of those meals. I found it was a lot easier to succumb to easy food like microwaveable stuff, than the more raw foods I'd eat when I would eat regularly. That's just me though.

That's because it's true. Someone just said 1800 calories through one large meal is the same as 1800 calories through several smaller meals.

The only thing you should be worried about is what you are eating. A healthy diet is the primary goal in weight loss

*Edit* Found it, this is one of the best fitness guides I've ever read, OP.
