It's impossible to sum up any one person's political views as "one or the other". Many Americans, if pressed for more detailed answers, would likely have positions on things that fall on both sides of the fence, or on neither.

I suspect they probably could if they felt passionately about them. That's a pretty big blanket statement to make about a group of people. You'd be surprised to find that most people are not as stupid as certain "elitists" would claim. In fact, it's usually the elitists that make wide ranging and unsubstantiated statements.
