[QUOTE="Ace6301"][QUOTE="DevilMightCry"] First off, neo conservatism doesnt even describe me. So its just a word being thrown around like its supposed to be offensive against someone you know nothing about, and hope it sticks in an argument, when you werent even called upon to argue. Second off all, I am a liberal, libertarian, and a conservative. And since the only viable party that can win that represents my views is the Republican, I am force to vote Republican. Dont see what the big deal is. You tend to attack me every chance you get. So, you must have some personal anger you cant get rid off, because apparently me just being here sets you off. MakeMeaSammitch

I guess you've drastically changed your views since the election then? Nothing I've ever seen you say is in line with classical liberal ideals. Why do you view neo-con as an insult? It's an ideological belief that was extremely popular in the American Right for the last 30 years.

It is largely dead or looked down on now.

Which is odd because a vast number still support the actual ideas but have turned away from the name because of a perceived stigma. As of now the in thing to be for the American right is a libertarian...but an extreme minority of them actually have those beliefs as evidenced by lack of votes for libertarian candidates federally as well as the red states having some of the most authoritarian laws. The Republican party just strikes me as being extremely confused at this point

If Ronald Reagan would be uncomfortable and John McCain is disgusted then the Republicans must be doing something right.

[QUOTE="Laihendi"][QUOTE="jimkabrhel"]I'll hope for a third part that is fiscally conservative and socially iiberal.jimkabrhel

That would be the libertarian party.

I've looked into the libertarian party. They do not fit my ideals, at least in practice by their politicians. Most that I've seen still look far more like far-right wing Republicans, particularly in the social area.

I find it interesting, as always, that you dismiss a well-known member of the GOP just beause you don't agree with him.

You sure we're looking at the same party? Most Libertarians put Democrats to shame on social issues. There are a few conservatives who call themselves libertarians, but most of them are registered republicans, not Libertarians.

Ray-gun was an asshole, Bob Dole is still an asshole. The Republican is a pile of putrefying shit, but those guys not wanting to be associated with them means absolutely nothing.

I was referring to those you describe in your second sentence. I haven't had much contact with true libertarians.

[QUOTE="Ace6301"][QUOTE="DevilMightCry"][QUOTE="Ace6301"] It's such an odd thing that the American right is now trying to claim themselves as libertarians or classical liberals yet retain the same ideas that they've had the last decade which of course is the ideology of neo-conservatism. Lying to yourself doesn't harm me in anyway but it will harm you. Also why do you presume others would become angry on a forum? Do you yourself become angry?

First off, neo conservatism doesnt even describe me. Calling someone a neo-con is like me calling your or Obama communists. And nothing has changed since the last election. I am still a non pot smoker favoring legalization, still fiscally and military conservative. Still personally not for gay marriage, but if people decided in my state that's what we want then fine. I believe in Representative Democracy. Still against the Iraq war, but all for defense where we need it. Still against Patriot Act and drone strikes. Still against big and expanding government and Social and corporate welfare. I mean I could go on, and on, and still wouldn't be "neo-con".

You know, I don't really have too much of an issue with neoconservatism per se. Granted, W. didn't do any favors for it b/c horrendously incompetent.

Well I'm not a communist but I think regulation has its place, just not to the extent that some countries have taken it.

By definition, eh?

Neoconservatism (ni o knsr vtz m) n.a moderate form of political conservatism that generally opposes big government but supports social welfare and certain other liberal goals.[196065]ne`oconservative, n., adj.Random House Kernerman Webster's College Dictionary, © 2010 K Dictionaries Ltd. Quite the opposite. I dont support any liberal goals or social welfare, or liberal agenda.

Ace don't you know that when God returns to the white house (I think he was president once) that our country will re-become the greatness that it never wasn't.

For all the complaining about a 'federal welfare state' they do, republicans sure eat it up when offered.

Sometimes before bumping an old thread you should ask yourself "is bumping this really necessary?".

There is no "Republican Party" anymore. They barely even hold any traditional Republican views. Small government? Yeah, by forcing their Christian dogma on the nation through legislation against abortion, sexual education and science education.

lost track of the date frankly. I was searching for something (can't really remember what) clicked on this and walked away from my computer. Saw that post and forgot what topic I was in, and responded.

As opposed to the other side imposing less liberty less freedom and their viewpoints. For **** sake, its politics. Everyone wants to live in a world imagined by them and based on what kind of people represent their views in Government. You don't want prayers in public... others do. You want gay marriage... others dont. You want to spend taxpayer money on foodstamps... others don't. And vice versa. It's a Representative Democracy. You say the constitution should be abonded and ignored, then you argue it infront of the Supreme Court wgen it's convenient. I'm just tired of it.

Hey, if the reps would ditch the social conservatism they might actually win a future election. As it stands, each year that passes they're losing more voters because the elderly are simply dying off.

I would be fascinated to see some kind of major change (or dissolution or split or something) in the GOP in my lifetime (I am 21) since the "Republicans" have been around since the 1860s.

IronBeaver

I doubt something like that would happen thanks to the two party/first-past-the-post system.  Also unlike in other countries US parties lack party discipline in favor of an "umbrella" model - so while there is alot of infighting jockeying between factions around primaries and the like they all come together more or less to vote for their party once the general election comes because the alternative is the other party winning which none of them wants to happen.  This was pretty much the case with Romney - the Republican base never really liked him as a whole but because he beat out the weaker candidates in the primaries they still held their noses and voted for him against Obama.

Personally I'd rather see a proportional representation system which would allow for more parties to be electorally viable - in which case you definitely would see both the Republican and Democratic parties fracture into 3rd and 4th parties.

it's time for the core republicans to split off and make a new party like what the whigs did to become the Republicans, remove the cancer from power, start fresh.
