If you were stranded on an island ( forever )

Would you rather have books or movies ?

You could have as many of either as you wanted...but only one option...books or movies.....and no there is no trick involved..like a sudden typhoon washing away all your books or your DVD / Blue Ray player suddenly breaking down. They would readable and watchable till they day you died...

So would it be..

A. Books

B.Movies

Thanks in advance for any response...

The climate would be more suitable for reading books than watching films, I'd imagine.

I love books, but I don't get to read much. I love movies sometimes cuz of the surround sound, but I don't really watch em much neither.... I love em both in the end.

I'm not sure. Movies would only be ideal at night, whereas books would only be ideal during the day.

Books>>>>>>>Movies. This is scientific fact. :P Books last a lot longer, are far more enjoyable to me, and there are a hell of a lot more of them that would interest me then there are movies.

Movies. To be fair, I've never given books a fair go, and I've only ever read the boring ones we had to do for school. So for all I know, books could be more enjoyable...

Yes they would be provided....as would lighting be for reading at night etc. I guess I should have explained the set up better.... Just think of it as your house or apartment were to be suddenly plunked down on a remote island..all the amenities would be there. couch,.fridge, bathroom etc...you would just have to choose to read books or watch movies. ( No regular TV or magazines though...like the nightly news or newspapers etc) However any TV show or series already on disc would be provided. I'm doing a paper for my masters....

if the root question is which medium i prefer, the answer is film even though i like books a lot too. film is a more exciting contemporary medium anyway with great filmmakers emerging all the time. plus you get a much higher amount of great films being me made in a short span. in 9 years, kubrick released lolita, dr. strangelove, 2001, and a clockwork orange. it usually takes cormac mccarthy about 6 years to release a novel.

There are many different types of books, so a good question would be which type of movie is better than a book. Science fiction is better in movie form.

Not exactly... The root question is about isolation and imagination... Knowing that you will never talk to or see anyone else again...never knowing who won the last Super Bowl or who the next president will be. Will you identify with the images upon the screen more then you would with the printed words. Would after so many years of loneliness would you recite the movie line by line or even assume the role of one or more of the actors ...would your sanity slip ? The same could be said for characters in a book...would you identify yourself with one particular type of personae...or many ? This what I'm really looking for.... I'm doing a paper on possible theoretical future deep space exploration and the effects that imagination and isolation would have on any astronaut....this is just one part of it. Other minor chapters have to do with multiple astronauts and their long term interactions with each other...for example should there be a woman aboard ? What are the ramifications if the other 2 are male ? Would they eventually fight over her...maybe kill each other ? I'm not talking about a 1 year voyage...I'm talking about 20+ years But the main jest of that chapter involves a solo astronaut and long term isolation and the ability to cope with it... But the main theme of the paper is...as a society has our ability to imagine as a whole been lessened by the advent of TV/Movies ?

in that case, id still probably prefer film for a long period of isolation. it doesnt have to do with me lacking an imagination. i just prefer film as a medium of expression. its natural. im not being told what happens. rather, im actually seeing what happens. there are plenty of films that still require a lot of the personal experiences of the viewer to be complete. for instance, ive heard compelling interpretations of 2001 being against evolution.

i love books, but film holds a special place in my heart.

Books, since movies would be useless without a vhs/dvd/bluray player, a tv and power.

Well the obvious answer would be to use probes to do initial exploration and then cryogenic freezing to send people to points of interest.

I think books, but it depends on the books. I'm thinking of getting into English literature so reading plenty of classics would be nice.

Movies, It's not even close. I'd imagine seeing and hearing people on tv would be a little less lonely then sitting in the quiet of the night with a book, that is, if I was on the island myself.

I love a good book, but I definitely have to go with movies on this. I think having nothing to do but read would eventually lead to me going insane. Plus, with movies, you get the benefit of hearing other human beings voices.
