http://finance.yahoo.com/news/Second-explosion-at-stricken-apf-4290653214.html?x=0

"SOMA, Japan (AP) -- The second hydrogen explosion in three days rocked Japan's stricken Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear plant Monday, sending a massive column of smoke into the air and wounding six workers. It was not immediately clear how much -- if any -- radiation had been released.

The explosion at the plant's Unit 3, which authorities have been frantically trying to cool following a system failure in the wake of a massive earthquake and tsunami, triggered an order for hundreds of people to stay indoors, said Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano.

The blast follows a similar explosion Saturday that took place at the plant's Unit 1, which injured four workers and caused mass-evacuations.

Japan's nuclear safety agency said six workers were injured in Monday's explosion but it was not immediately clear how, or whether they were exposed to radiation. They were all conscious, said the agency's Ryohei Shomi.

Earlier, Tokyo Electric Power Co., which operates the reactor, said three workers were injured and seven missing.

The reactor's inner containment vessel holding nuclear rods was intact, Edano said, allaying some fears of the risk to the environment and public. TV footage of the building housing the reactor appeared to show similar damage to Monday's blast, with outer walls shorn off, leaving only a skeletal frame.

More than 180,000 people have evacuated the area in recent days, and up to 160 may have been exposed to radiation."

Poor Japan :(

Unfortunate, but not nearly a worst case scenario.

From what I'm reading, it doesn't sound like this one will be a problem as far as public health and safety is concerned. The containment vessel is fine, meaning that, despite the dramatic video of the explosion, it didn't result in the release of any radioactive material.

Yeah, but there are never any guarentees. It most likely will be contained, so the chance of another Chernobyl happening is pretty small. Ya never know though.

Unless the condition of the containment vessel has been misdiagnosed and is compromised or there are notable future developments, I'm inclined to think that things are under control.

Oh I agree, I'm just saying that nothing is 100% certain. The media loves to blow things out of proportion anyway.

Not really. I do get a little confused though when people respond to official reports saying "d00dz, ****'s fine, stop worrying" with suspicion and doubt; sometimes I start to suspect that they were really wanting a more spectacular disaster.

Human beings are inclined to look for patterns. Look at the entirety of Earths history, not a small portion of recent events (Krakatoa, The Asteroid that killed off the dinosaurs...etc). The world isn't going to hell, Japan is situated geographically in a location prone to these things. They don't happen all the time, especially on this scale, but there is always the chance that something this devastating WILL occur. Just as people who reside in Tornado alley, the people living close to meeting tectonic plates assume some risk in doing so.

Despite the great calamity which has devestated Japan. It's people have earned my respect. Damn, I feel so bad for them- and they are being so civilized about it - waiting in line for their radiation checks. Here there would be full out rioting, looting, raping, murdering, arsonand people getting shot by police. Just look at the people of New Orleans after Katrina.

If this happened to Japan, it could happen to any nation. Least of all the US which is most likely even less prepared for a catastropheof this magnitude than japan is.

Again, look at Katrina. Our Government and our State was so inept and incompetent when they knew that hurricane was going to hit New Orleans weeks in advance. Within hours Japan has evacuated hundreds of thousands of it's population in response to this disaster.

That's one thing that was never a concern to begin with. Nuclear reactors do not use weapons-grade Uranium, and they have no means of compressing the material into a supercritical mass.

If anything this should help nuclear power if people listened to facts. A power plant sustained a double disaster of the 4th largest earth quake on record and a tsuami hit and no one has been killed or injured. Instead everyone is yelling about meltdowns and how everyone is going to die :(.

If "this" happened - what is "this"? An ancient nuclear reactor withstanding an extremely strong earthquake and tsunami with only minimal radiation leak that is insufficient to cause a danger to public health and safety? If that's our nuclear reactor doomsday scenario, then I'd say we're doing pretty darn good as far as nuclear power is concerned.

Maybe it's time to revise security protocols and securty implementations regarding nucelar power. And no, people against nuclear energy are not hippies...they at least understand the risks associated with nuclear energy. You don't and therefore denounce them as hippies.

Inventing ridiculous doomsday scenarios that are literally impossible does not count as "understanding the risks".

[QUOTE="surrealnumber5"]cant wait for hippies to use this event to denounce nuclear power, as if 8.9 earthquakes are a regular occurrenceLocutus_Picard
Maybe it's time to revise security protocols and securty implementations regarding nucelar power. And no, people against nuclear energy are not hippies...they at least understand the risks associated with nuclear energy. You don't and therefore denounce them as hippies.

Risks are a lot less then other forms of power. Less then solar.

Deaths per TWh Coal –

Coal – world average 161 (26% of world energy, 50% of electricity)
Coal – China 278
Coal – USA 15
Oil 36 (36% of world energy)
Natural Gas 4 (21% of world energy)
Biofuel/Biomass 12
Peat 12
Solar (rooftop) 0.44 (less than 0.1% of world energy)
Wind 0.15 (less than 1% of world energy)
Hydro 0.10 (europe death rate, 2.2% of world energy)
Hydro - world including Banqiao) 1.4 (about 2500 TWh/yr and 171,000 Banqiao dead)
Nuclear 0.04 (5.9% of world energy)

Reading all these terrible things which have happened this year make me feel so grateful for living in a 'boring', stable place which doesn't flood or get earthquakes or hurricanes or anything else too troubling. Also makes me feel bad for whining about inconsequential crap when awful things like this are going on. I can only wish everyone in Japan the best of luck in recovering.

Inventing ridiculous doomsday scenarios that are literally impossible does not count as "understanding the risks".

So the current explosions at nuclear powerplant aren't possible hazards? Guess you really need to see some radioactive fallout before you believe the hazards... Just think about it, even if the nuclear/radioactive waste/cores/energy is contained...there can always be leakage due to unexpected circumstances. This earthquake was unexpected and they're worried about the cooling in a damn sea...guess that shows how dangereous nuclear energy can be while there are far safer forms of energy resources.
