Thats how I feel about it.

it was ony the simpsons and they had similar things in family guy with us eating weird things, the thing is id never even heard of it until i saw it ont the simpsons. Eels were caught near where i used to live but the majority of them are exported to japan. It can be quite dangerous to go eel fishing actuallyhagadorn

Eels were probably used for exaggeration. But some of the food across the pond is a bit....different.

touche, but when you only see the stereotype played up then it would seem that that is all you think. I suppose however that stereotypes play an important role in certain types of humour.

No we don't fall for those stereotypes. We all know the English fly around like Mary Poppins. And that 1/4th of England are chimney sweeps by profession, wearing large top hats and suits.

having visited america on numerous occassions i happen to know for a FACT that the majority of people there are not obese (or maybe that the obese ones were to fat to leave there homes) and i also know that its mostly those along the bible belt in the centre of the USA who voted for Bush which is unfortunate that these people make up a large proportion of your electoral roll. Unfortunately we in britain also seem to have bad habits in electing govenment official what with thatcher in the 80s and blair being elected more than once. And our population is hardly the thinest in the world, infact it was suggested in a sitcom i watched the other day that the obese population of britain be fed to thrid world countries to eliminate obesity and world hunger in one fell swoop

Im british and im proud. Thats why it pains me so much when you see the poorly acted british stereotypes played out by americans on TV. Ive noticed that the majority of people on these forums seem to be american so ive decided to ask the questions: Do you all assume that we only have oxford english and cockney accents? do you also all assume that we eat eel pie? and i was watching an episode of family guy the other day and they replaced the drunken clam with a proper pub but i heard some one suggest drinking warm lager, whats the all about? It seems that these stereotypes are everywhere. In an episode of x-men that i was watching a few years back there was a girl who was meant to be from manchester who sounded like the queen. It seriously begs the question whether that voice actor had ever heard someone from manchester speak. Also any americans views on brits trying american accents are welcome.hagadorn

I haven't seen X-Men or the episode of Family Guy you refer to. Are there more examples perhaps? As a US citizen, I've never thought about it. I love British humor, film and music. I guess there may be some stereotypes poorly portrayed by American actors. *shrugs* I can't think of any, off the top of my head though. I can say, however, that I had some friends in college who were from Liverpool...and when they got drunk, I could hardly understand a thing they were saying because they would use a lot of English slang and their accents became more extreme.

I haven't seen X-Men or the episode of Family Guy you refer to. Are there more examples perhaps? As a US citizen, I've never thought about it. I love British humor, film and music. I guess there may be some stereotypes poorly portrayed by American actors. *shrugs* I can't think of any, off the top of my head though. I can say, however, that I had some friends in college who were from Liverpool...and when they got drunk, I could hardly understand a thing they were saying because they would use a lot of English slang and their accents became more extreme.

British stereotypes are not always exaggerated for humourous purposes. In serious American films or television programs you always get the token British guy, who 99% of the time sounds like Hugh Grant or a Victorian chimney sweep, when in reality, only a relatively small amount of the British population actually sound like that.

I'm not saying that our actors are too great at American accents either, but you can spot an American actor putting on a British accent a mile away.

LOL. Yeah, they do have pretty thick accents, even normally. It's amazing how much accents can vary, even over a smaller spread of land like England. Just imagine the difference in accents in China!

British actors seem to be very good at impersinating American accents (all types).

Well, i know that there are many types of British accents, from my deep, research in the Harry Potter movies. There are the:

Harry Potters: Seems to be the most common British accent.

Ron Weaslies: I dunno where, but he sounds different from Harry

Hagrids: Seems to be more mountainous sounding, like was from a farm or rural areas.

I cant remember any different accents in Harry Potter now. So, of course, there are Scottish accents, which are obviously different. And Irish, easily distinguishable (usually).

That's a fair point and I'm not too Bothered by it really, Ive just never heard an American do a convincing English accent. I suppose though we can hardly talk especially with our comic history, the Black and White Minstrels for a start not to mention Alf Garnett.
