Im british and im proud. Thats why it pains me so much when you see the poorly acted british stereotypes played out by americans on TV. Ive noticed that the majority of people on these forums seem to be american so ive decided to ask the questions: Do you all assume that we only have oxford english and cockney accents? do you also all assume that we eat eel pie? and i was watching an episode of family guy the other day and they replaced the drunken clam with a proper pub but i heard some one suggest drinking warm lager, whats the all about? It seems that these stereotypes are everywhere. In an episode of x-men that i was watching a few years back there was a girl who was meant to be from manchester who sounded like the queen. It seriously begs the question whether that voice actor had ever heard someone from manchester speak. Also any americans views on brits trying american accents are welcome.hagadorn

Funny, because it's done the other way around too :o

Also, wtf is eel pie?

I use to live in England and the only stereotype I can agree with, is that the local food is rather bland and has zero flavor.

Of course. When you hear people offering sacrifices to gods you never hear of tofu or a celery stick. NO! It's blood. And what better food of the gods than black pudding? Mmmmmmm.

The only one that bothers me is the bad teeth one, apparently there was a study that showed british people have bad teeth... and that we brush our teeth with screwdrivers and stuff...

That's the only one that bothers me because it's like some American said "hmm these tea drinking, sconne eating insults don't seem to be offending them... urghh everyone in britain has bad teeth"

Everywhere is stereotyped. Even cities are stereotyped here in the U.S. by hollywood. Example: I'm from New Orleans. The new orleans accent is similar to a brooklyn new york accent. It's nowhere near the same to the untrained ear, but you get the point. Most TV shows or movies that have someone from new orleans in them, always make them have a southern accent. Like a southern belle Georgia gone with the wind accent. Another stereotype, is we eat gumbo and crawfish during every meal of the day, and spend the night time at the french quarter.

The reality is, we have a brooklyn style accent, eat gumbo/crawfish/redbeans and rice, etc. every now and then, and rarely see the french quarter.. that's where the tourists are.

I've been to london and most of those seem to be true. There was many places there that offered fish and chips. It rained every day for that week I went. Many people did have bad teeth. (older generation.. 35+). Lots of old buildings, etc.

[QUOTE="Gavin2232"]lol. Being pround of being British, you must be having a laugh. Britian is a joke.AirGuitarist87

And why is that?

Well firstly am scottish, not that there is anything to be pround in that anymore. the first thing is the whole war on iraq. I couldn't believe that it went ahead with all the protests ect. They just did it cause America did. Then there was the fact that they could launch WMD in 45 mins but they never let the inspectors finish there search to prove this. now that aside, I assumed that since the labour government had f***** it up so bad that they would lose the election. But they won. I could't believe it. Thats when i lost faith in britain and hence lost pride. Am not really a fan of living in a county that is Americas **** and can't make it's own mind up. Now before you start with your, "scotland has it's own parliment", it has no control over foriegn affairs. Not that it's any better. Thats the main reason why Being proud of being british is a joke. There is nothing to be proud of anymore. The country's a joke.

While I can't stop you from having your own opinion on our great country, basing your entire criticism on Blaire isn't the best choice. In case you've forgotten, the vast majority of Britain was against the invasion of Iraq. And since Brown (Scottish, I might add) has taken office we've started to withdraw troops.

There are many things to be proud of as a British person. Don't throw them all out the window because of Blaire sucking up to Bush.
