Yeah me 2 :D
I really do think it's a crazy law. Even if you are agaisnt piracy, you must admit this is a bit extreme.
They think it's the same as stealing a car or something, but trust me it's not.
The stupid government has no right to take anyones computers, theres nothing wrong with piracy.
The government and the RIAA should just get over it, because they will NEVER stop piracy.
So they should stop complaining and just face the facts, that they will never win.
theres nothing wrong with piracy.

I wouldn't go that far, but really, stores budget revenue lost due to shoplifting on account of the fact that they know it'll happen, even if they take measures in an attempt to prevent it. I really think that the folks concerned about piracy should just follow suit, and perhaps try to make people actually want to buy their stuff.
They also really need to start being honest regarding how much they're actually losing from piracy; their current "estimates" basically involve saying that every single pirated item would have been purchased had it not been pirated, which is totally asinine.

Is there nothing that man can't do.
I wish he was my leader.
America lol. Hell this is why I dont buy music. If the music industy was actualy reputable I would. Well gald I dont like in that hell hole anyways.
And for anyone who condems piracy, have fun I shall be listening to my flac files which will be good forever.
Whoa whoa whoa....no senator missed the vote or desented?!
Who knew Congress could work?!?!?!
hokies1313
You call this working? This is ridiculous.
There are far more important matters in the US and abroad right now than worrying about people downloading bootlegged movies and crappy music from already rich artists.
Give me a break. Yea it's pirated music and movies today, handguns tomorrow, and then what? Speech? I'm not trying to be sensationalist, but isn't this borderline cruel and unusual? Computer? Fine take that, that was used in the commission of a crime. But a 360? An iPod? Seriously?
Jeez. Other country's pirates are laughing at us. Now we're sissy pirates. Hmph. Note: this is all sarcasm, don't take me seriously.
[QUOTE="bededog"]How do you tell if the music is pirated? :?ElraptorYou play it backwards. Only the illegal stuff has secret messages from Satan.
Wrong, the backward stuff is the one which has been ripped with a piss poor bit rate and had the satanic messages removed.
They sent you misinformation so they could set you up.

I live in a country where corperations don't run the country.Oh wow, real witty. I'd never leave this country. We're far from perfect, but let all the naysayers and America haters leave. Only IDIOTS would ever want to leave the US just for anti-piracy laws. If someone's a true pirate, they could care less what the government or corporations say. America's been through far worse times than what we've gone through, you can ask our grandparents.
Anyhow, I digress, I don't want to get into international forum warfare on GS. =)
sweeet, more money goes towards another dumb law...ohh well....im sure they will be able to close down every torrent site in the internet  good old bushDante2710
Just to play Devil's advocate here, you know that it's not only Bush, right? If he vetoed, it still would have gone into law. It passed the Senate 100-0. NO ONE opposed! How crazy is that?! It passed 381-41 in the House. GOVERNMENT is to blame on this one, not one President, not one party. That makes it even more crappy, IMO.
The RIAA can kiss my ass for all I care. They don't make the music therefore they don't deserve any of my money as far as I am concerned. They rip off many artists (30 Seconds to mars being a great example) and yet they do nothing to contribute to the music and at times IMPEDE the music.
I can't wait to watch them crash an burn as artists begin to realize the internet is the ultimate promotion tool and bands will eventually not need to go through the POS record labels.
I hope nothing comes of this idiotic law.
I'll be waiting for the Police to come to schools and look through everyones Mp3 player. Sure, it'll take the whole year, but it'll be worth it!? :S.dipedAnything to stop those god awful communist pirates.
Oh well. Dont own a mp3 player nor a ipod. If I want music I listen to the CD's in the car. At home youtube is my friend. Never downloaded a single song.
Only people who need to be worried on this law is those who use their devices on public property. I figure there will be adaptions so that if someone thinks your playing illegal music, they can stop you and check. Like if someone suspects your carrying something illegal on public property. Profiling at its best.. center on the people that look poor but are bumping and grinding to the beat.
Alright, so how is this going to work?
Are they going to use the Patriot act so they can search your house without a warrant, seat themselves in front of your computer, and search through the files looking for illegally downloaded music?
Great.
Lets say that I have often borrowed my friend's CD's to upload the music onto my computer and from there put the music onto my iPod, returning the CD to my friend afterwards. I didn't steal anything here, but what if they see music files on my computer? I don't have the CD with me to back up that I didn't download the music illegally, and there we go; my computer, iPod, Xbox 360, phonograph, all taken away from me because of an Act the moronic President signed to keep himself off the lowest-rated President list.
Great.
Seems somewhat asinine to me.
This is not good news.
Am I in trouble if I use and pay for limewire?

yes. you are going to jurassic park hell

You did steal however. You borrowed a CD that you didnt buy and put the contents on your own hardware. If that wasnt stealing, then everyone is innocent because most of the stuff was obtained through someone uploading their CD and people "borrowing" it.
I really hope this doesn't bleed over into the UK. I understand action needs to be taken to counter piracy but this is beyond ridiculous. How can people think the government coming into your home without a warrant and searching all your electronic devices is ethically sound?manicfoot
wow, what a scared and defeatist government we have. First, the Senate didn't put a block to a bill where we put a "czar" into power. Then our president signs the bill to make it a law. Instead of giving tax credits or helping develop technologies to better combat piracy, we give up on it and put in a czar into power that will be the all seeing eye? I was never a Bush hater until this past month, first with the bailout plan and now this.
I'm not silly enough to think that this entire plan was his doing, as anyone who knows true politics will tell you. But collectively this last month has been the most disappointed I've been in my government in along time. If people think the only change we need is in the White House, then we're gravely naive.

Some people just don't get the fact that we should always keep a fearful, suspicious eye on what the government does to keep them from gaining too much power......
This is the third frightening bill I have seen come through the Bush administration. First it was the Patriot Act, then it was that thought crime bill and now this....
[QUOTE="pianist"]It's harsh - but I have never agreed with piracy, nor have I ever believed that 'soft' measures will be effective in curbing it. So I certainly won't complain about this. It wouldn't affect me anyway, since I don't pirate. The only people it WILL affect are people who do pirate. And the phrase "screw them" is how I feel about them. Bellyaching that it's becoming more dangerous to enjoy intellectual property illegally isn't going to win any sympathy votes from me.

The day the industry provides a means to test-drive their products before buying it is the day people stop downloading music for preview purposes. I know a good many folks who go through this routine to check out albums they're interested in before buying them. With CDs costing between $12-$30, they should offer more than cover art to tell us the quality of the product.
Also, getting rid of DRMs so that when new technology comes along, people won't have to re-buy their entire catalogueswould be a start. The movie industry gives people the option of a rental, and with new tech provide better quality product. With music and new tech, it's less quality and more restrictions.
If the RIAA had some service where you could stream music from a huge database, so you could preview music before you buy it, I'd imagine many would stop downloading. There ARE many, though, which are just out to steal and not purchase any of it. Those I know who "preview" download tend to have music libraries of 200+ albums, in comparison.
Just providing a different perspective Pianist. Just imagine going to a car dealership and wanting to buy a car, but you're only allowed to see a piece of paper that shows what it's all about, and a nice little blurb about how it's a fun ride. You're not allowed to see it, not allowed to test-drive it, but you can choose the colour of it. I'd reckon most people would shy away from dealerships like that.
Not sure about the states, but Canada, Japan, UK and Australia have this lovely store that I happen to work at called HMV.
It is now an overall entertainment store, but began as a core record store.
To this day shoppers can listen to ANY cd in the store before buying, therefore alleviating the need for piracy. You don't want it? No problem, we re-wrap the product and put it back on the shelves, if something happens to said product during the half hour instore usage, it is our guarantee to provide you with new one free of charge.
