[QUOTE="cybrcatter"]I was under the impression that some online retailer was going to buy them. Pirate700

For what purpose? Hard copy books, magazines and CDs are dead mediums. It would be flushing money down the toilet for any company.

It saddens me to see that the age of print is dying out. I know that technology is trying to replace printed books with things like the NOOK, but the ability to feel a book in hand and actually flip a page is something that I do not want to give up. Makes me mad when I see things like this going away just to make way for a new "screen" to take over. Technology just needs to slow down already.

Fair enough but I'm not sure how much weight the Borders name holds in terms of online services. It's just a second rate Amazon.

spazzx625

Agreed. If their ereader was actually worth something I could see someone picking them up for that...But it's a turd.

Borders doesn't have their own ereaders. They partnered with Kobo and sold their ereaders, but it is still a separate company. Kobo is still going strong.

There is a Borders within walking distance from my apartment. This makes me sad. :(

The only time I ever went to Borders was when I had recieved a gift card for there. Between Amazon and the library I have no need to go to a brick-and-morter bookstore and pay inflated prices.

Paper books are probably going to be sold in Mom and Pop shops, like records are now, in the not so distant future.imaps3fanboy

Truth. I can think of two mom-and-pop bookstores downtown here, but there's not a single chain bookstore to be found anywhere near here.

We'll borders is the biggest book store in New Zealand, so when that closes we will have nothing in which to order in books or get new releases. It's extremely sad.

Never was a fan of Borders, B and N was much better. As for people saying the print will die out, like hell it will. If vinyl still exists and is a growing market, I doubt books--which are a far more viable product then vinyl--will die any time soon.

I agree that it will be a very very long time before we see the end of printed books. I'm guessing we will see the end of newspapers a lot faster though. Really just about anything that is a read once and throw it away will go by the wayside with the possible exception of magazines which have been oddly impervious to the decline of print.

We have Whittcouls but that's owned by Borders as well, so I guess that'l be closing too. We only have 2 or 3 Dymacks in the whole country and one of them is not near me. All this means that I cant buy brand new books anymore, I'll have to wait years for them to come to a second hand store. I dont like electronic readers either.

Last week I visited one of their branches in Hollywood but it's closed.

I never buy anything at Borders, I prefer B&N but still, it's a little bit sad to see Borders getting closed since I like to browse at Borders sometimes.

Barnes and Noble seems to fit all your requirements. To be honest, I could never tell the two stores apart.

The question is, how close is a B&N to him? A borders was a football field away from where he lives. Is B&N that close?

I know, Borders does have (not sure if Borders.com will disappear yet) the best rewards program. The basic program is free and one got coupons in email at least once a week for 20-40% off. If you did pay for the Borders Rewards + membership, you got an automatic 10% off each book plus what ever the coupon was good for, upwards of 45% easy if not more. Purchases were counted and when a certain dollar amount was reached, one got $5 on Borders Bucks which could go towards the purchase of anything. Borders Rewards + was $20 to upgrade from the free Borders Rewards. B&N wants $25 and offers the same things that BR+ does except the rewards money, but doesn't have a free rewards program.

Not only that, but B&N coupons are only good for specific books each week. Borders coupons were good for almost everything in the store, including all novels and manga. This is killing me. To think, 4 months ago, there was a Borders, Waldenbooks, and B&N all within a 5 minute drive of where I live. Now Borders is gone, Walden is closing, and I'm stuck with paying more for B&N or ordering online. :(

Not surprised. Within 10-20 years at the max, major book stores will be all gone. The popularity and convenience of eBooks and tablets have gotten too significant to be ignored. It's tragic, but it's moving on.

Borders - Done in by its own Stupidity.

Thought the article was pretty spot on although honestly it only hits the big obvious stuff that an outsider could point out. I could write books about how many thing they constantly failed at not the least of which is they hated paying seasoned employees, covered up for underperforming stores, couldn't even master the simple supply and demand skill, and took no interest in what successful stores did to become successful.

It's a shame that people are moving on to "e-books" or whatever. Nothing beats going to Borders or Barnes and Noble and getting that book you really wanted in its physical form.

No I know. I was just using it as an example of a bookstore. I'm afraid though that it's only a matter of time before they go out of business.
