Just something I've always found a little weird is when people call others by their last name, for instance if my surname name was Conroy, people would call me Conroy rather then my first name. Now generally I've only seen this happen in movies/books/games etc but I was wondering if this was common practices in other countries, if so who would you be likely to by their last names? i.e family, friends, acquaintances etc.

I'd never call someone by their surname alone; it'd have to be Mr. [name] or Mrs/Miss [name]. I think calling someone by their surname alone is a bit rude, especially if it's to someone you scarcely know...

Ok guess it's not so weird after all, but what if they have really weird last name? Like it wouldn't sound right trying to call them by it.

I think it's okay for someone like your boss to call you by your surname, but with the Mr./Ms./Mrs. on it.

But I just hate that people say it a little wrong, and then it becomes "Flower". I really don't want to be called Ms. Flower, use the right name, dammit...

People used to do that all the time back when I was in high school. I found it really dumb, because they would always yell when they called someone buy their last name.

I think people realised it made them look like a fool, cuz Ihaven't seen it happen much lateley.

Throughout high school LOTS of people called me by either just my last name or by both my last name and full name. My last name is Kerr, and people just found that easy I guess. Most people call me by my first AND last name though. And I love it, to be quite honest.

Actually, I've never been called by my last name alone, except in rare circumstances. I prefer being called by my first name though, calling me by last name just feels lazy to me honestly... but yeah in certain situations "Mr. _____" can be appropriate in more formal situations.

There are 6 Chris's in my maths class, out of 11 guys and 6 girls. And 8 Chris's in the whole year. Bit of a headache to get our attention without using surnames.
