[QUOTE="PRT-CCM"]Yesterday, I watched Resident Evil (the first one), and thought it was remotely awesome. I think the best part of the movie is the laser beam scene, where all the soldiers inside that chamber are killed. Now, the way that blue laser beam cuts through them is highly unrealistic, according to my eyes. I wonder if there are real lasers IRL that can do that, and where could you purchase these? Thanks.Theokhoth

Wal-Mart.

wow:lol:

i dont think lasers can cut people:P

Yes, you can buy lasers online that can cut through stuff. They aren't powerful enough to slice you like a light saber though, it's more like trying to cut someone in half with sandpaper.guynamedbilly

this

those lasers that cut through plate steel are also mounted on huuuuuuuuuge machines, and they take a long time (like a snail's pace) to cut through stuff.

tbh I would be more worried about the Jaws of Life

Theyre portable and can cut through a car!

I've seen vids of lasers in the US army that can shoot down missiles...

guynamedbilly

Yes, it was on a history channel show.

You can't carry those in your pocket though. Even if you could it would be very awkward. "Is that a vehicle mounted military grade laser in your pocket or are you just happy to see me?"

There are incredibly powerful lasers in existence. But the require a HUGE amount of energy to power, and they are BIG.

Others here have mentioned military lasers that are being tested for use as an anti-missile system. What they DIDN'T mention is that plans are to put these missiles on huge jets. Why put them on huge jets instead of small drones or sleek fighter jets? Because it would pretty much take a giant jet just to house the laser.

It takes a LOT of power output to power a laser strong enough to burn through you instantly. And you're not gonna fit that laser into your pocket, or even your briefcase.

We don't have the technology to produce that strong of a laser yet.

A laser with enough energy behind it can cut off a limb, yes. However, if you want an "instant" disembodiment, your laser would have to have such a high wattage that more likely than not, getting hit by one wouldn't just hack your flesh up; it'd make all the blood around the wound heat up to the point of vaporization, making your limb explode rather messily and flinging boiled flesh everywhere. It wouldn't be like the Star Wars movies at all where the worst you get is a cauterized stump.

Sort of like the guns in District 9?

Because that'd be good enough for me. Those guns were badass.

it could be possible?

i wanna try it one day. not with a real human, just a dummy very similar to a human

hiphopballer

Why not just buy a shotgun or something?

Conventional weapons are cooler than lasers anyway. Nothing beats a big, loud gun absolutely tearing **** up. Do you think that Robocop or Aliens would have been even half as cool as they were if they had lasers instead of machine guns?

Those sci-fi lasers suck. Give me a big loud ugly machine gun with a high rate of fire. If you want something that says "power", you need something ugly and bombastic that wakes up the neighbors and scares everyone in a 3 mile radius.

Also, real laser beams are actually invisible, and don't make those "pew! pew!" sounds from the movies. If you've gotta put a hole in a sheet of metal or make a turkey disintegrate, then it's FAR cooler to just shoot it with a large caliber rifle.

Pretty much. Concept is the same: apply a massive amount of energy to a (fleshy) target in the span of a millisecond and he'd turn into a gory display of fireworks.

OK, you would like a laser that burns people, but I want a laser that bisects you.

My mum worked at some place that made microchips years ago... She told me of an accident where somebody cut into skin with one but then I am not sure if it was a laser or a plasma cutter.

just do what the rest of us laser envy people do, stick with samarui swords until tactical lasers are released to the mass population.
