I swear, I am the only person in Canada that can drive stick. Anyone else that gets behind the wheel of my car stalls or jerks the car pretty much every time. I refuse to drive automatic cars unless I absolutely have to. You have so little control over auto cars. (I shift into lower gears going uphill. You can't do that with an auto)

I used to think it was useless. But then I learned (I learn auto first) and I now think it's pretty fun.

It's hard the first few times. Then it gets pretty easy.

If I had to buy a car now I'd buy Manual, because it's less expensive (about 1000 bucks for a normal car, like a Civic) and it actually has better gas mileage, even if the difference is often very small... oh, and it's more fun to drive.

I learned on a manual. I lived in BC where there are tons of hills and wide corners, so you have alot more control. I live in the city now, so I guess it's understandable why there is alot of people here who can't drive stick. I just don't like auto. To me, it feels like driving a golf cart :?

Nah, I should learn though... I get so bored with my automatic that I just drive with the gears I have "access" to. It's an older automatic, no tiptronic or steptronic or whatever, so there's Drive, 3, 2, and 1. Since it's only a 4 speed, that basically equates to me having "full control." It'll override me on the downshifts (to keep the revs up), but not on the upshifts (even if it redlines), so I'm scraping every bit of fun out of it... even if it's not much...

I think I'll either learn to drive stick, or get a dual-clutch as my next car.

I just finished my driving lessons and they taught me on a Manual car the whole time. My dad's car is also manual so I'll be driving manually for quite a while.

lol my cousin did that and blew out the transmission on his sentra. cause those low gears are only supposed to be used for like snow and stuff. your car is normally a 4 speed in D which is why you can feel it shift itself. its not like if you leave it in D its only going to use one gear. and even cars with 5 and 6 speed trannys still have the 1,2,and 3 low gears

No. I'm still learning to drive manual! I'm getting my first car soon. I want an automatic but my brother says manuals are better and that I will regret later if I get an automatic. But idk, I think I will go with the automatic.

Yep and probably will never go back. I mean I know my truck be it a suburban or F250 Ford will probably be automatic just for towing boats, jetskis, bikes and ect around for ease of use in those applications. But otherwise I don't think I will get another car without a manual transmission. I hate automatics. I mean I am not trying to be elitest here, I just think they are an absolute bore to drive, kind of slow and hate the feeling that you could have more control over what your car is doing. IMO I actually find that I can easily get around better in winter in Wisconsin in a manual than an automatic.

I kind of actually prefer where the car is kind of held by the gear. I am not talking about winding the piss out the engine while going down a steep hill in 2nd gear, but in that it gives you a steadier sense of speed. In automatics when that Autotranmission fluid starts to slow down the car almost goes into a neutral or coasting which I am not a fan of that.

Everybody in Holland learns to drive stick these days, back in the old days there was actually a license with you could only drive automatic

I prefer manual shifting, only expensive cars have nice automatic transmissions and as Im still in university I don't get to drive those very much ;)

Manual shifting is also less boring. Only positive thing is when you're stuck in a traffic jam is not having to operate the clutch all the time.

Well besides the interaction between the driver and car, automatic and manual transmission are getting pretty similar now. The new cars that are coming out have smarter chips that make the shifting smoother and better, which allows for a better driving experience and better gas mileage. I still want to learn manual though..

Manual transmissions are fun to drive, but if you want real shifting excitement, then climb into the cab of an 18-wheeler that has a 600 HP Cat engine coupled to an 18-speed Roadranger transmission. Now that's shifting heaven. :P

I'm aware. I do it because I get bored leaving it in Drive, letting the computer make all my decisions for me. Like if I accelerate hard, the computer wants to shift at about 5200 rpm, but the engine redlines at 6500. But if I upshift myself, the car won't override me and I can shift just before it redlines.
