I know many anthems that are better than the USA's. I personally don't find our anthem to be inspiring.

Uh...
Oh, say can you see by the dawn's early light
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars thru the perilous fight,
O'er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming?
And the rocket's red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.
Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?
Land of the free and home of the brave are the only words that aren't directed towards the flag.

Francis Scott Key wrote the national anthem while aboard a ship watching a siege of an american fort by the British. He was inspired by the valor of the defenders and the fact that they still held the fort despite an intense night naval bombardment. The anthem is more about that valor and the spirit of the defenders. There is a symbolic meaning to what he is saying. While to the concrete minded it may seem about the flag, he is not referring to that.

It's still pretty aggressive and martial for a song that is supposed to present the core of what a nation is about, IMOIt's still pretty aggressive and martial for a song that is supposed to present the core of what a nation is about, IMOxaos
So? It fits. Like Xena the Warrior Princess, the USA was forged in the heat of battle.

Oo rah....rock and roll. I like our anthem. It means something....hard to sing though.[QUOTE="clicketyclick"][QUOTE="The_Ish"]I have never seen the Canadian anthem rock like this.The_Ish
ORLY?
Yes, really. That barely sounds like the Canadian Anthem, since he seems to have added so many things.
But then again, we are going to be biased on the matter.
Well yeah, it's just a bunch of youtube videos anyway. They've have rock versions of virtually every song.

Either you're not familiar with the Canadian National Anthem or you didn't listen to the whole video.

I am, I did. The guitarist is obviously talented, but it seems that in trying to make the Canadian anthem rock, he added a lot of things, unlike the American one I posted. It would have been better if it was simpler, because it was just a pain to hear.

Ya, rock does tend to comprise of taking a melody and creating variations and riffs on the theme. ;) But I could still sing along and easily recognise it.

Exactly. The flag is supposed to represent America and its ideals.
Although I think America the Beautiful would fit for a national anthem. Ray Charles did it the best.

So many ignorants here, the canadian national anthem has been created by Calixa-Lavallé, who is obvsiouly french, and has been sang the first time on june 24th, quebec national holiday. The english took it away and translated it. (Excuse my so-so english, I'm not perfectly bilingual).
People from the state, stop calling yourself americans. People from Costa Rica, Canada or freaking Venezuala are as much americans as you, we all live in America. It's like if Germany, France and Italy all called their country Europe...In french we don't call you americans, we call you États-Uniens, which would translates in United-Staters kind of thing. Find a better name, you can do it!!
The english stole our anthem and our identity, but we still looooovvee you guys, it's all about love! What would the United Sates do without the french fries? Oh yeah, that's right, call them freedom fries.....mouahahah!!! lol!!
And what would the world do without frenchkisses?
basseon
Last time I checked, French fries were actually Belgian...

Never said they weren't...historic evidences points out Spain for the first makers of frenchfries and Belgian is the symbolic creator, but there is no real proof....http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/French_fried_potatoes

I agree. i like the American anthem more.
The Simpsons disagree...Why Marge is holding both the canadian and Quebec flag in her hand at 28 seconds?
To avoid anti-Simpsons protests from Quebecois?Because this year Québec city is 400 years old...I was so surprise to see Maggie holding the Québec's flag...I'm not patriotic at all but I think the canadien anthem rules, the lyrics are pretty intense when you think about it...
Reasons.
1: The Music to the American National Anthem is actually not American. It's British...
2: Canada probably has the happiest Anthem in the world.Another happy National Anthem is the Mongolian National Anthem. Worst Anthems are probably Turkey for being slightly evil and Israel for being too depressive.
Tony-Harrison
And the Canadian National Anthem is not actually Canadian, Its Québécois. It was made by a French-speaking "Canadian" who grew up and lived in Québec. In the french version (which is the first version made, and from which is based the english one, of course, there's no reference to the "fleuron glorieux" in the english one though, quite funny, isnt it?) the "fleuron glorieux" refers to the fleur de lys. Its pretty cool you like an anthem where there's a lot of references to Québec. LOL.
