Two state representatives called on Gov. Pat Quinn Sunday to deploy the Illinois National Guard to safeguard Chicago's streets.

Chicago Democrats John Fritchey and LaShawn Ford said they want Quinn, Mayor Richard Daley and Chicago Police Supt. Jody Weis to allow guardsmen to patrol streets and help quell violence. Weis said he did not support the idea because the military and police operate under different rules.

...

So far this year, 113 people have been killed across Chicago, the same number of U.S. troops killed in Iraq and Afghanistan combined in the same period, Fritchey said.

Article

That murder figure is pretty staggering...Just last week or so there were 25 people shot in a 12 hour period. Violence is a HUGE problem here, but do you think this sounds like overkill or an appropriate measure?

The National Guard was used here in DC during the Nuclear Summit, but one of their giant trucks ran over and killed a cyclist :( If it were just DC police, using a police car or van, the cyclist would probably still be alive. The military isn't designed to operate within a populated peacetime city.

TBH, I had no idea things were that bad :(

If I lived there and had my choice, I would choose extra security.
But neither option is that appealing

noo. it's called escalation if you bring the NG in. The police get automatic weapons, the gangs/criminals start buying automatic weapons. then it just escalates. Key to policing is working with the community, not heavy armed guys putting the fear of god into everyone.

He could declare a state of emergency in Chicago and bring in troops to try to keep the violence down and to protect the citizens. It isn't unheard of for a branch of the military to brought in in order to keep people from being hurt. The 101st Airborne were brought into Little Rock to prevent any harm toward the Little Rock 9.

That would not be a smart idea. They need to give police orders to be more vigilant and get the community involved NOT the military!

Place the guards there, then work with the community, then remove the guards. The guards are just there to stop the violence right now.

Yeah, true enough, but it's the same principle as putting a beefy security guard near the entrance of a store, to ward off potential threats. I'm not saying it would work, but I think it's worth a shot (no pun intended)

There are many more troops in the US than in Iraq and Afganistan. There's about 120k troops in Irag and 70k troops in Afganistan, the national gaurd alone has 470k, the regular army has another 540K and the army reserves have 197k and the air force and navy on top of that.

That'd be a funny situation, similar to Saints Row, I was playing Saints Row 2 and thinking that if this was a real city, it would be terrible and a war zone. lol.

Detroit actually lost that title years back. Honestly, the dangers of Detroit are so freaking over-exaggerated it isn't even funny. The city is not bad at all besides having a homeless population that is about as big as the homeless population in DC. If actually effort was put in to revive that city it could be amazing.

I read last year that the homeless population here (DC) is about 14,000 :o That's enough to fill an arena. Crazy.

woah that is so cool sorry but i just find these story's interesting maybe he should have played more video games and thought of the life lessons in them, i think its overkill and sad to the ones that lost their lives but this is a story for the books very interesting usually most serial killers have a pretty normal life but they see things differently and are more sensitive to situations normal people aren't :| i hope more people raise their children right to have feelings that normal people have but even so even normal people have the same chances of going on a killer break out then anyone else.. A lot of people i know find it funny that murderers happen i guess that shows how used to people get about serial killers i know i'm used to them :| if a serial killer said he would kill me i'd probably just say do it so they wouldn't because most of them just do it for the thrill of people being afraid or scared of them dying by their hands..

I bet it is.

I personally just realized how huge the homeless population was when I went there for a week-long field trip in 8th grade. We constantly came across homeless people. Some people took pictures of them....

Your average gang member is likely used to seeing and dealing with cops, they likely don't affect the gang members at all. Personally, I think seeing armed soldiers around would be fairly intimidating to your average gangbanger.

] What would you do though? Summer, the worst possible season for gun crimes, is coming. It's obvious from the level of gun crimes that they need immediate support in particular neighborhoods. How is exactly is this an overreaction? There are more deaths attributed to gun violence in these areas than in actual war zones.

Bring them in and start cracking down on any known gangbangers or people violating their paroles. It's a short term fix but seriously seems like Chicago needs all the help they can get for now.
