lol i went to a christian school from 1st to 9th grade and i remember they used to tell us it was a sin to listen to any kind of music that had a beat because it would make our bodies move in ungodly ways. i always thought that was ridiculous, like why would god hate music?

That is an example of what happens when those who say they are Christians are utterly ignorant of their own faith. I got that growing up as well. It is absurd.

Sounds like it was a fun experience from 1-9.

Music was discovered in celebration and religious ceremonies with chants and whatnot to god(s) goddesses, deities, kings etc. etc. long before christianity ever existed,

Try telling that music with a beat is sin, to a gospel church here in the southern U.S. (though the thought of a capitalist Jesus is hilarious to me, but thats something else all together)

The Bible does not really give any indication as to any preferences Jesus may have. All that hoopla a couple decades ago about syncopated rhythm being evil was a bunch of poppycock. However, I think it would be fair to assume that Jesus would not be a fan of music that is obviously designed to be negative and/or take pleasure in evil. Basically my opinion can be summed up here

If he happened to pop into my local Methodist church, I'm not sure he would have appreciated the slightly off-key mumbling of hymns as warbled by the purple rinse congregation that's for sure.

For me it was suffocating at times. After much study I learned the truth, but it did some damage.

He'd probably hate it because 1) Pretty much all Christian bands sound horrible 2) They're using his name to sell.

Jesus Didn't hate Judas for betraying him, or the people who denied him, Jesus didn't hate the ones who crucified him, (he looked to the sky and said "forgive them for they know not of what they do" then I guess God the all knowing, all enlightened being was like "Oh, yeah I guess I didn't think of that, thanks for letting me know.)

You think he would hate this?

I said hate it, as in "hating the fact." Jesus hated the fact that the Jews were selling Temple money outside of the Temple, therefore he flipped the tables over and the Jews off.

I remember seeing a live Christian rock band in some cafe. It was about an hour of different songs each consisting of a lyric repeated over and over again. Ex:

"I'm counting on, I'm counting on God.

I'm counting on, I'm counting on God.

I'm counting on, I'm counting on God.

I'm counting on, I'm counting on God."

Like this, but it wasn't a joke.

It seems like it's about time for Jesus to go through a rebellious phase, he'd probably listen to Satanic Black Metal.

First, I am a devout Christian. Secondly while Jesus may appreciate the intentions of those who made the music, he would agree that it sucks harder than any genre of music in existence. So, no he wouldn't listen to it.

A friend of mine said it best: Hymns are about you singing about God. Christian rock is you singing to God about yourself.

Being a Christian who dislikes the vast majority of Christian music (it's not the lyrics that bother me, it's the actual music), I don't think Jesus would listen to the music that praises himself, opposed to music that glorifies God the Father. (which I wouldn't put it past him to listen to).

There's nothing wrong with Christian Rock, I'm sure God headbanged to a good Christian Metel song once. Rock itself isn't a bad thing, kind of like an axe, it can be used for sinister purposes, but it's also used for practical purposes as well. It depends on the person. Hip-hop can be used to complain about how poor you are or how brutal and corrupt the police in the area is, or it can be used to promote Nike or Armani.

[QUOTE="racer8dan"]

It was my assumption that christian music is suppose to praise God, and not man. Alot of christian people preach against "worldy"/secular music, yet some listen to this "christian" rock/rap that, more or less, takes worldly music and adds christian lyrics. IMO, christian rock is worse that regular rock, it tries to justify wordly music in God's name.

maheo30

As a follower of Christ who adheres to the doctrines of grace (TULIP), the Bible says nothing about style. Christianity is an intellectual faith that celebrates the things God has revealed. Things like aseity, omnipotence, omniscience, omnisapience, Christ's two natures, sola scriptura, dotrine of endless punishment...ect. As long as the lyrins are scripturally sound then the msuic is fine. I listen to rap or what is better termed lyrical theology. Others listen to blues. Others country. There are different styles, but as long as the doctrine is fine there is nothing wrong with it.

I disagree, I think lyrics are only half the song. I could take highway to hell and change it to highway to heaven, and it is now a christian song. I'm not saying its sin to listen to any kind of music, because I don't believe it to be so, but it can lead you to sin. Music is powerful.

First, barely anypopular Christian rock songs feature riffs from "secular" (I feel so lame typing that word) songs with Christian lyrics. If so, its a poor tactic because most people can figure out the original lyrics. Anyway, I think it depends on the musician's intensions for making Christian music. You could make God-praising music with the intension of making it big.

Sadly, that sounds like most contemporary christian music. Very shallow and no depth. That is why I listen to Shai Linne or 116 Clique

Yes, I know that, I was just making the point that its more of something you would here in secular music, rather than christian music.

I'd hope God/Jesus would like some innovative tunes to go under their names. And if that's true, well gee, I have no reason to listen to most of Christian music in general, do I? :P
