That's right, I went there!

I hate it when people judge music. One cannot talk about a certain genre of music if he/she doesn't know anything about it. But in order to know anything about it you have to understand/like it. Trying to learn about a genre of music you don't like is pointless because anything you hear about it, you won't like. I listen to metal and unlike most people that listen to metal, I don't judge other people's taste in music. You like rap, you like pop? Fine, that's your taste, mine is different. harislay3rThat's not my point. My point is that people keep going on about how incredible classical music is and how intelligent you need to be to compose it. Sure, sure. But the result itself is musically over rated. It doesn't do a thing for me.
Nobody will have the balls to agree with you for fear they wont be taken seriously in any future music debates.PernicioEnigmaHelps prove my point. Those who listen to classical are such tightasses about it. Like religious nutcases they treat the supposed "superiority" of classical music as an absolute fact

Again, that totally depends on the listener's taste.
I don't know many people except myself who rate it highly, so no, in my opinion it isn't overrated.
Pop music is overrated.....
But the result itself is musically over rated. It doesn't do a thing for me.RisethNamelessThe yardstick for musical quality, of course, being how much RisethNameless likes it.
you just explained the current state of musicSome of it's great, fantastic even, but there's a whole huge amount of it that's just...nothing. Like some guy earning a paycheck writing really long, utterly uninteresting compositions.

I can't really see how any music can really be overrated.LonelynightBecause RisethNameless doesn't like it.
Why dosent this site have a thumbs up button?Your sig sums up my thoughts quite nicely ;)

I enjoy it, and it being overrated or underrated will never have any influence on how I feel about it becaue it doesn't really matter. I understand where you are coming from, but fail to understand why it matters, for any type of media
In the media, classical music is often associated with class (no pun intended), sophistication and good taste. Contrast that with rap, which is often associated with music for the lowest common denominator.
In this sense, I can see why classical music can be overrated.
Can't deny its importance... however how many people on this forum can say they legitimately listen to it more than any other genre? It doesn't dominate my playlist by any means.
I love maybe a dozen pieces. Then again, there is so much I havent heard.
I tend to shy away from music that is very busy, or has lots of crazy technical capacity, so that is definitely a part of it.
I love Classical music, it's so beautiful and filled with emotion. Unlike much of today's music, like all those boy/girl bands and other pop stars with their artificial music and lack of emotion in the music.Smokescreened84
Deep man.
I actually cringed a little after seeing this. But I actually don't see how it can be overrated when a small population of people listens or even give a crap about it. I don't think one has to be of a particular intellect to listen and enjoy music. Music (for the most part) is just sound: you either like it or you don't. Also, all of the popular music and such, all genres included are all derived from classical music. And yes, I love playing and listening to classical music.
I respect all kinds of music... Metal Rock HipHop Classical Electronic etc.
BUT TO HELL WITH MAINSTREAM POP HOP ARISTS!
Brainwashers.
most people I know don't listen to cIassical music (they're missing out).fabz_95How many people as a result of Lady Gaga's new video listened to for the first time and loved Beethoven's Pathetique sonata? I think for a lot of the people it's not the case of actively shying away from cIassical music but rather just not being exposed to it. Music is pretty much inexhaustible and there's plenty of great music we're all missing out on, and sometimes it takes a Lady Gaga or a porn movie (yes, Beethoven's Les Adieux made an appearance in Asa Akira's Insatiable 2... double win) to bring to light what you're missing. There are those who do seek it out, listen to a piece they don't like, and are immediately put off entirely, but cIassical music is so diverse and rich that chances are, if you search for long enough, you will find a piece/composer that you do like, which is why saying it is overrated is absurd. TC just seems to have a beef with cIassical elitists, which is fair because all elitists suck, but that should never detract from the actual music. Unless of course he has a valid reason why the music is overrated.
Woah, look at the silly people getting freaky at me. Like I hate classical music or something.
No, I just don't see why so many people consider it a solid fact that it is better than all the other music.
I really like it sometimes in films and games, but thats about it. I never listen to it normally, though i dont think its over-rated, just down to opinion.

'They' don't necessarily consider it a solid fact that it's better than all the other types of music; 'better' is subjective. It's more the point that cla$$ical [I CANNOT BELIEVE GAMESPOT BLOCKS CLA$$?!?!?!!?] music gave rise to pretty much everything today.
While I don't really listen to classical, I can admit its influence on most music and musicians today (unless Ke$sha is a huge fan of Mozart). That said, its orchestration, harmonies, and pace has influenced some of my favorite bands, so I can't really say its overrated.
