Poll Come on...realistically speaking, is the South REALLY that bad? (61 votes)

Yes, it's a blight on the American continent. Every stereotype fits like a glove, in every single way. 26%
Somewhat. Some stereotypes are accurate, but many are either exaggerated or untrue altogether. 48%
No. Once you get down to the raw facts and statistics, the South is not much worse than other regions. 26%

Living in Tennessee, I guess I'm at risk of having a biased opinion.

Still, I vote for 'Somewhat.' Some of the stereotypes do indeed fit like a glove, yet others are not nearly as rampant as people often like to claim they are. Shit happens here, but shit happens everywhere.

And no, the majority is not racist. I should know.

@jun_aka_pekto: You hit the nail on the head as I live in Saskatchewan which is smack dab between Alberta and Manitoba.

the kkk still walk down the streets in some of the cities in the south carolina. clearly people who have nothing better to do with their time.

The fact that the most notable thing they're doing is walking down the streets should say something.

Point being...I'm not doubting that there are a lot of dumbass horrible people in the south. But these days, it USUALLY tends to be a lot less "I was murdered/raped/beaten for being black/gay/female/jewish/etc" and more "people down there just seem to be stupid assholes."

I live in Tennessee as well and I don't think it's that bad.

I don't like the accent that I got from living here though.

Oddly, despite living here in rural Tennessee my whole life, my accent is very mild. Some acquaintances from California visited in August of last year, and a couple of them specifically mentioned how non-country my accent is compared to everyone else's.

I guess I'm kind of an enigma, lol.

the south of denmark is almost identical to the north of denmark in terms of culture

in denmark, we don't speak in terms of southern denmark being a place of simplemindedness, instead, that honour is reserved to the west of denmark

west denmark: your "alabama" stereotype, farmers, uneducated people, unemployed, racist and nationalist

eastern denmark: your "new york" stereotype, artists, architects, politicians, celebrities, haute couture, liberal and multiethnic

funny how these facets of society seem to apply to so many different nations around the world, despite being very different countries altogether

only thing that noticably changes are shifts in cardinal directions, e.g southern local culture compared to north, or western local culture compared to east

I voted somewhat but I don't have lots of experience in the south. The only southern states I've spent a good amount of time in are Florida, and Georgia. Although, as far as I can tell, I do prefer the north.

Depends where. Southern cities are very different from the rural areas, trust me. I live in Houston Tx. and we have a lesbian democrat mayor, New Orleans Louisiana had weird satanic vampire event every year and people from all over the world and the u.s attend, and most southern cities vote democrat. Rural areas are very backwards however.

So I would say somewhat.

Just curious, but how did he know that he was shot at just because he was black?

Anyway, your anecdote aside, violent crime has been going down for a while. And it can easily be seen that most murders aren't coming from a white dude deciding to kill another dude just because he's black. just for reference's sake, how many murders have been shown to be the result of the KKK within, say, the last 20 years?

Houston is fine as is New Orleans. But, I'd be careful along I-10 between Houston and New Orleans especially once at the elevated sections. I make it a point to have a full tank of gas upon heading east out of Houston.

Some of the Canadians I know (those in Fallon, NV) are from that region as well. I don't think they're racists though. I doubt they'd move to Fallon which has a big Native-American (Paiute Tribe) population if they were.

Eh it was much the same as other areas of the country. Some good some bad. I lived in North Carolina and Georgia in the south and Texas if you count the southwest. Though Texas does have an ego about themselves.
