LOL of the century.

http://www.cnn.com/2009/POLITICS/09/04/obama.schools/index.html

What is wrong with these people? How did we get to the point where people are AFRAID of the President giving their kids a pep-talk to stay in school and to take their education seriously?

We say something socialist to school kids every time we tell them to call 911 when they're in danger. >_>

Not everyone trusts the President thanks to how he's run things this year. People would have balked just the same if Bush had done this. Note that it did say that they realized that their announcement of this was poorly worded.

Bush visited schools all the time... we didn't hear about it unless the nation was attacked during his visit.

W. Bush would have been laughed off the school TV monitor. I think he skipped it for fear of being made fun of on the Daily Show.

Reagan did too and I didn't feel compelled to sell arms to Iranian Contras after the speech.

But I did have this strange urge to max my credit cards and buy lots of stuff that I never really needed...

At this point I'm not getting worked up about it. Obama is not the first President to give a televised pep talk to school kids. I believe Bush 41 did one on staying away from drugs. I doubt Obama is stupid enough to turn it in to some kind of political speech.

That being said, I am curious to see the actual text of the speech. The WH is scheduled to release it on monday before the speech on tuesday. If he really wants to do some good, he will speak directly against the anti-education culture so prevelant in the black community. As Chris Rock says, you get more respect for getting out of jail than getting through college in the black community. Only he didn't use the word black, he used another word that gets you modded on these boards.

This is just ridiculousness. It's not like he is the first president to address school children and Regan even spoke directly about his political stances, including the reasoning for his beliefs. The only difference is the workbook with that oh so threatening question "what can you do to help the president" and Obama has already removed that question and agreed to release the transcript so that school officials can pre-screen it, yet people are still up in arms. The only half way decent argument against this is that, by law, all classroom material has to be approved by various ranking agencies before it can be taught; thus, because Obama included this workbook, he is breaking the rules by not taking the appropriate steps to get the material approved. Although that may be a valid point, I doubt they would have cared if everyone wasn't freaking out about Obama using propaganda to get kids on his side. I cannot believe that people jumped on this assuming that the point of it is to indoctrinate the kids of America.

Reagan addressed school children after Iran-Contra and lost a huge amount of trust in the process...no one on either side of the isle said anything.

H.W. did the same thing, and at least one person spoke out - the house majority leader at the time - a democrat. The only difference now is that a high ranking republican is leading the charge against the president for speaking to school children. I don't see how this could be anything but a purely politically motivated move on the part of republicans.

I don't think a few months ago people would have been up in arms this much. The health care mess has a lot of tempers flaring right now, so everything the president does is suspect in their eyes, and the wording earlier where they were saying the speech would be a "How can you help your president right now?" was like lighting up a cigarette at a gas station.

Meh, I can't disagree with that but at the same time I am a crazy political junkie Libertarian who can get fired up with the rest of them but I think people are out of control with this one. They need to take a step back and think rationally for a minute. I feel like half the nation could almost be diagnosed as paranoid (and while I am kind of joking about that, there is some truth....in the last few month I have seen a significant increase of clients with paranoid like behavior mostly surrounding conspiracy like thinking stemming from current politics) I know this is a really touchy time with healthcare among other things but I think we could benefit from everyone taking down a notch or two :P

To use your phrase, I can't disagree with that, and I'm a right-leaning Moderate. :P Honestly though, I'd be lying if I said that I didn't think the chaos in town halls and such was a good thing, especially since it woke Congress up and at least made some of them realize that we can't afford anything like that. No one's innocent right now... both sides are playing major politics.

Being hard-working and being selfish don't always correlate. What's wrong with the belief that the government isn't the best option when it comes to helping people, especially if they force it out of everyone via tax dollars?

The government is here to provide services that the free market can't, like police, fire-fighting, military, protection of rights, and enforcement of the Constitution. In emergency situations yes, I think it's ok for the government to help out, but they've proven through many years and elected leaders that they don't relinquish control of things back to the free market once things stabilize. Where exactly did you get the idea that the government's purpose is to help people in that sense? The Constitution exists and limits the powers of government because the founders did not trust government; what reason did they have to? Why should we trust them now if they're just going to demand more tax dollars?

And, if the free market can't provide affordable health care for a large portion of the population (I assume that's what we're talking about here), then the government should step in and provide it to them. How many people protest medicare? What's the difference between providing health care for old people, or providing it for lower class people?

Then they ought to do that, without placing prior restraints on other private businesses who are providing healthcare. You want health care reform? Compete for it like good businesses.

You mean with a for-profit model? How? That's the problem. The government's main purpose is to serve the citizen's needs. The insurance companie's main purpose is profit. By design, they can never directly compete.

It is a government-run program that provides payment assistance for medical expenses for citizens over 65.

[QUOTE="Vandalvideo"] Then they ought to do that, without placing prior restraints on other private businesses who are providing healthcare. You want health care reform? Compete for it like good businesses.Engrish_Major
You mean with a for-profit model? How? That's the problem. The government's main purpose is to serve the citizen's needs. The insurance companie's main purpose is profit. By design, they can never directly compete.

I never said the government had to have a for profit model. I said, if the government wants to offer an option, they ought not place undue burdens on private enterprise. Government business = fine. Government regulation = not.
