[QUOTE="Theokhoth"]

We say something socialist to school kids every time we tell them to call 911 when they're in danger. >_>

chessmaster1989

Not to mention we expose them to socialism when we send them off to public schools...

>_>

Seriously though, this red scare is annoying as hell. Europe is enjoying higher standards of living than us yet socialism is so evil, it makes no sense whatsoever.

You're kidding right? Sourcing from Bill O'Reilly to get an unbiased view? The man who says that MSNBC is terribly left-wing, and then puts Fox News Network as the unbiased news corporation that is doing good? And his own shows TV ratings compared with ALL of MSNBC's? Yeah, that's definitely the way to go about convincing others that you are right.

It's unfortunate that Bill O'Reilly preaches to the choir. It'd be so much fun to see what all but the radical conservatives would say... if they had watched his show.

Um, no. The U.S. is nowhere close to a socialistic society and nothing Obama has proposed would turn us into said society.

Uh, yeah, no. When income inequality is at historical record heights we are not socialistic by any stretch of the imagination.

Socialism:

1. a theory or system of social organization that advocates the vesting of the ownership and control of the means of production and distribution, of capital, land, etc., in the community as a whole.

2. procedure or practice in accordance with this theory.

3. (in Marxist theory) the stage following capitalism in the transition of a society to communism, characterized by the imperfect implementation of collectivist principles.

Socialist Party USA:

http://socialistparty-usa.org/

If you think Obama or the democratic party is socialist it is very likely you suffer from a severe case of stupidity, And/Or you watch Fox News.

It's absolutely ridiculous. I have gotten to the point that I can't even stand to watch the news anymore to see what idiotic thing the majority of right wingers have thought up. Sometimes I wish a Republican would just win every single election, at least things will calm down. America just can't handle it. Our IQ is too low.

I didn't really see what Obama said, so I can't judge it. I have no problem with him speaking at a school (so long as he is invited and treats all schools equally). But I would have a problem if Obama did try to make a political point at a school.

LOL of the century.

http://www.cnn.com/2009/POLITICS/09/04/obama.schools/index.html

What is wrong with these people? How did we get to the point where people are AFRAID of the President giving their kids a pep-talk to stay in school and to take their education seriously?

Republicans are trying to rally the troops (the concervative base) and are willing to go to any extreme to get it done. The ways they are dooing it are getting ridiculous. I can't believe how well it's working though -- my dad is always ranting about something like this. The reality is they are spreading FUD, which is hypocryitical concidering they used to blast democrats for doing the same thing. It's sad when a good message for childeren to hear can't be comunicated to them because of politics.

For some folks (yes on every poltical spectrum) it seems the ultamate horror is that other people might hear something they don't agree with. How do these people make it thur their day?

I was a bit weirded out when I heard the Pres.' main focuses was to ask kids how to "make America better" or something like that (don't the quoted part too seriously, I forgot how's it worded but it was in that scope).

Edit: Forgot to finish, then again it's probably (don't know what White House said it was about) the Pres. just encouraging kids to stay in school.

I don't think the speech will be some Stalinist speech, but you can't tell someone with a straight face that Obama isn't going to splice some of his leftist agenda into his speech along with all the academic encouragement he will obviously mention as well. Not that I have a problem with that, hes just exercising his right to free speech and there's really nothing we can or should so about it.

I really wish people wouldn't go nuts the moment they hear socialism. Its a great idea; instead of putting the control of the most important aspects of the economy (health care a great example) in the hands of people that only care about themselves, that aren't elected, and have no one to answer to, you give the reins to an elected government that must take care of the nation to keep their job and answers to the people.

Capitalism is contradiction; where it gives more freedom to the industry and economy it creates restraint because it allows individuals with a large control of the economy (no matter how they got it in the first place) to control our prices, health care, and even government just through using money.

A good example; my mom has cancer, the only insurance she can get forces her to pay more than 80 % of the price (over 400 dollars) after an initial payment of well over a thousand for her medicine. How in the world is this private insurance company good for her? They don't care if she wastes while they take every cent she has.

Capitalism is immoral, selfish, and for the religious ( I am Christian) a sin.

I think if you're worried your children are going to suddenly going to switch politically in a direction you don't like as parents because some dude spoke to them for went minutes then: 1. Yeah they call that being a teenager it happens on its own (and college student to some extent). 2. Whose problem is that really? The guy who is talking for 20 min or yours as a parent?

I read the first few paragraphs of it, didn't finish it because I figured I would be in school tomorrow listening to it. But its quite sophomoric of you to just start throwing out sarcastic garbage because if you actually read it effectively you would have detected some politics in the first few paragraphs. Notice how he mentions the fact that he didn't have money for school in Indonesia, making it seem like he (the poor) was working so hard, but the harsh capitalistic world was still holding him back. Leftist agenda #1 detected already in his introduction to the actual speech. Sure you can tell me that's not what he meant and just wished to describe his early life when he was struggling. But when your handling a speech of this magnitude, you can't exactly be obvious about the political points you want to get across, they have to be subtle.

Capitalism isn't a contradiction. There are two types of freedom; negative and positive. Capitalism just places more value in positive liberty.

Good speach. it really made me wish i'd had a speach like that when i was in school. All i heard over and over again was to stay away from drugs.

If it helps even one student than it was worth it.

Dude you are reading way to much into it. There are poor children out there who go to school in America, they do actually exist, and they need to be motivated if they are going to have any sort of chance of living their lives to the fullest.

You must not understand the concept of Socialism. England is a Mixed Economy, so is the U.S. The United States school system is Socialism, Social Security is Socialism, Medicare is Socialism.

And please tell me how England failed?

Gotta love the replies in the article such as "I feel scared to live in this country." And them talking about forcing things upon the nations school children is right in line with right wing arguments concerning the use of the word God every morning in their reciting of whatever it is they recite. Hipocrits seem to come in all shapes, colours and beliefs.

It's pretty lame that all the Obama opponents have to go on is "he wants to socialize America". They feel that they must complain about something.

First, Obama isn't a socialist. Second, why bother indoctrinating people who can't vote? He'd be better off doing a national address right before the mid-terms. And third, its not as if the conservatives don't force their 'family values' down everyone's throats at every opportunity. Unless, of course, they're busy having an affair at the time...

But when your handling a speech of this magnitude, you can't exactly be obvious about the political points you want to get across, they have to be subtle.

...This is what conservatives actually believe...

Nice try, but very few conservatives believe that.

I would put forward a reasoned, rational, point-by-point explanation for WHY this whole "controversy" about Obama lecturing kids to stay in school and study hard and not talk back to their teachers is silly. But frankly, it's been a REALLY long work day and I find I currently have neither the patience, nor a shovel large enough to sift through the BS of this "controversy". I'll just settle for the "Boy who cried wolf" analogy and a fingerwag at the conservatives pushing this.

Second, why bother indoctrinating people who can't vote? Bourbons3

Well, obviously it's planting the socialist seed in the brains of 2nd graders. When they are able to vote in 10 years, they're going to remember this speech and vote Democrat because of "the nice Democrat" that spoke to them for 15 minutes in 2nd grade.

Even the congretional Democrats issued an inquest the first time Bush tried a speech to school aged children, tit-for-tat.

The dental industry isn't part of the NHS - everyone 18 or over has to pay for their dental treatment. And that's why so many people don't bother.

That is for the child to decide. I had Frank Zappa as a role model growing up. My parents hated his music, but that didn't change the attraction I had to his life style.
