Their not stupid, just in denial about the well known liberal-bias in reality, and the fact history is on the side of progressives.
if we really want to analyze the facts, conservatism is logically inaccurate while liberalism is not. conservatism as a whole relies on the appeal to tradition fallacy. therefore, conservatism is a fallacious ideology with no logical basis.

I think that the message by the conservative media attracts the less education, but many conservatives I've spoken to are very intelligent. You also have less educated liberals who spout just as much nonsense as less educated liberals.
It goes both ways. There is a lot more media coverage of conservatives saying dumb things, because they seem to do it in public far more than liberals, for whatever reason.
