Obama gave a speech today where he stated that he wants to make cuts to Medicare and Medicaid, and get rid of the Bush tax cuts for the wealthy. His goal is apparently $4 trillion in cuts over 12 years.

Of course, it's all talk at this point. But let's say Obama actually does implement the things he talked about and significantly reduces the deficit while he is in office. How would this affect your opinion of him?

I think they will still complain. They can't give the man a break. but I guess we on the left would be the same way too.

I give kudos to any politician that does things that I agree with. But, like you said, talk is cheap. He isn't the first president to say one thing and do the exact opposite.

The sad thing is...he could improve the country in so many ways (hypothetically speaking) and there would still be a bunch of people out there who would hate him because they don't think he's Christian.

It depends on what "cuts" he makes...

Well, honestly it wouldn't matter. He is still a politician, so I still wouldn't think much of him.

Not publicly...

If by 'party' you mean elected officials, they'll never give the opposing side credit for anything. If by 'party' you mean the part of the population that are registered republicans, I think thats a completely different story. We like things that make our life better (democrats, independents, republicans alike)

Maybe so, but I think it's positive that he's at least talking about deficit reduction now in more specific ways. I would be very surprised if he made a speech like this and then did absolutely nothing to the programs he mentioned, that hasn't really been charactersitic of his presidency thus far.

It won't amount to anything. The deficit will NEVER be brought under control. The proligate spending will continue because the American people are unwilling to endure the pain that it would take to truly reign in the govt.

Sorry for being so cynical but I've come to the conclusion that all politicians are charlatans and the USA has become a nation of whiny kids that want the govt to provide for their needs.

12 year plans never work, its all BS PR talk. he has no control of what the next administration and congress will do when he is out so the furthest he should be talking about is 2012, if he wins in 2012 he can talk about plans up to 2016, but anything outside of his terms have nothing to do with him. how much will he lower the deficit and/or debt this year and/or next? if he signs on to a balanced 2012 budget i would vote for him.

he's done a lot of useful stuff when it comes to the environment. you probably don't care, but I do. Also that 30 billion for small business, that was pretty good. I don't know where you stand on the Bush tax cuts, but it seems most republicans are for them though you have said you are a moderate so I don't know. I didn't care for their extension personally.

i get five digits a year doing taxes on the side, i hate our system and think it is complete trash, but i also get paid because it is that way. i would lose a lot of side money but i think a flat tax or set bracket tax would be the best system, no credits no deductions (like contribs), depreciation is the expensesing of an asset over its useful life and i dont have a problem with that expense being deducted from income. and that '30B' was just excelerated depreciation it had nothing to do with aiding small businesses, unless you are talking about another 'small business' aid thing.

Good for Obama. I don't like Medicare cuts, but if that is the compromise republicans need to repeal Bush tax cuts then I'll take it. Both sides need to give up things in order to reduce the debt.

That doesn't sound bad, as long as he does something productive without needing to take more money from the middle class I have no problem.

I have no problem with him raising taxes if its done reasonably. Many countries have higher tax rates. We need some basal level of social services and the current rates may be too low to support that. I don't know how he plans on cutting medicare and medicaid. Does he mean to provide less coverage or less services?

I don't know if this talk will translate into action, but his strategy is pretty politically savvy considering that the Ryan budget exists. That budget provides cover for Obama's entitlement cuts.

It was already proven that the removal of the Bush Tax Cuts would have enormously reduced the deficit by 2020 and the republicans shut it down because they are more interested in fighthing the other party on every single issue then actually furthering the nation in any conceivable way. They will view it as a sucess if Obama gets absolutely nothing done and is no re-elected as opposed to him getting what he wants passed and improving the nation. god i love politics

I just read a transcript of the Obama speech.

Man, he rippedthe Republican plan to shreds. This is the first time I've seen him ripped into Republicans this mercilessly in a long time.

If he campaigns like this, I think he will easily win re-election.

But then again, Obama does tend to to get complacent after he scores victories, which is very annoying IMO.

I agree, I'm all for the middle class/small business owners more than everything else. I'd like to see corporations and the rich hit harder and some entitlement programs cut rather than the middle class feel the pain of either spectrum.

I just read a transcript of the Obama speech.

Man, he rippedthe Republican plan to shreds. This is the first time I've seen him ripped into Republicans this mercilessly in a long time.

If he campaigns like this, I think he will easily win re-election.

But then again, Obama does tend to to get complacent after he scores victories, which is very annoying IMO.

do you know where I can find the video itself?

Here it is:

Great Speech. Republicans just want to cut everything that has been effective and an important investment to our overall country.

He has reduced the deficit (see: health care reform law); didn't seem to change the minds of his conservative critics in the least bit.

Same thig they wthought of Clinton, after all republican presidents = massive deficits.

To be fair, I blame that on the fact they like to go to war alot.

Since 1901 Woodrow Wilson, FDR, Harry Truman, JFK and Lyndon B. Johnson and now Obama share one thing with G. W. Bush. They are all Democrats who have sent men to war. Even Clinton sent armed forces into harms way. Kinda blows your hypothesis out of the water.
