"Controversy has always swirled around the New York Police Department. Are minorities treated fairly? Do officers resort to force too quickly? The constant stream of negative news stories sometimes overshadows the quiet compassion shown by many police officers in this teeming city.

Jennifer Foster, a police officer from Florence, Arizona, recently witnessed such an act of kindness. She and her husband were visiting Times Square in New York City and saw a shoeless man asking for change. As they were approaching the man, an NYPD officer walked up to him.

The officer said, I have these size 12 boots for you. He squatted down and put socks and new boots on the man. Foster was especially impressed that the officer expected nothing in return and did not know that anyone watching."

OT seems to be of the mindset that we're monsters who seek only to do harm to others. Maybe some of you should think better of us. Things like this happen every day and the only things that get reported are the negatives.

everyone has experienced both sides.

On a side note: Its stupid that people assume cops are pigs or w/e. Each cop is an individual person.

There are mixture of good and bad cops. It's not because they're in the police force, it's because of individuals' different personalities.

There's lot of good cops, people who genuinely wish to serve and protect. However there's a fair number of **** who powertrip and end up doing some pretty terrible things and for whatever reason those **** seem to manage to go unpunished and it reflect negatively on the entire police force.

Yes, they aren't monsters. They also aren't heroes.

They are paid public servants. Many let the power get to their heads. Many perform their duties well as a public servant. The frequent stream of negative news abotu police officers simple stems from the fact that police officers are held to higher standards than typical people. It comes with the job.

Some are, some aren't. The state trooper who didn't give me a speeding ticket when I was younger and gave me a lesser ticket wasn't a monster.

But a lot of people complain about police............until they need them.

Cops do get a bad rap, in general. Tell me, aside from hearing about a cop doing his job correctly and saving lives, when do we hear anything good about the police?

Ring_of_fire

made me think of this:

Rorschach's Journal. October 12th, 1985: Dog carcass in alley this morning, tire tread on burst stomach. This city is afraid of me. I have seen its true face. The streets are extended gutters and the gutters are full of blood and when the drains finally scab over, all the vermin will drown. The accumulated filth of all their sex and murder will foam up about their waists and all the whores and politicians will look up and shout "Save us!"... and I'll whisper "no."

While most cops are generally good guys (for instance airshocker doesn't come off as a @sshole) There are definitely cops that are horrible people that just have the job for a power trip.

I think the everyday happenings of the police and their department heads are in line with what we'd expect. The issue you have is that along with a negative reporting of an incident comes fuel to the fire from the department heads. People do NOT GET why an officer who was shown on video assaulting someone is put on leave with PAY. Also I do not think most know about police unions and protocols.

It is just a bit hard for people who don't know to try and see it as anything but cops protecting their own before protecting the people. While not true the majority of the time it really hurts the overall image when, in fact, it is.

Ok... If we can't judge all cops from one bad act(Rodney King), then we can't judge cops for one act of kindness.

Exactly. Stats and figures are what's important. Taking one instance of good deed and projecting as truth is just as propagandistic as doing the reverse.

Cops can't charge you in California, but FBI can. Whether you like it or not you're still breaking a federal law. And Supreme/Federal law beats state law.

Godwin came early in this thread. On-topic... Cops are like everyone else. They come in both the good and bad variety and, as usual, it's the bad that makes the news.

DEA agents aren't really cops in the typical sense, and they almost always bust dispenseries that aren't in compliance with local laws.

On the few occasions that I've interacted with police officers in the Redmond/Bellevue (WA) area (during minor traffic stops), I've always been very impressed by their professionalism. In this part of the world, they seem to be pretty decent, intelligent and articulate.
