I think I'm a pretty funny guy, and I like to know a lot about humor, but I don't understand British Humor. Could someone please explain it to me?

There's nothing to understand, you either find it funny or your don't, and those who don't have a **** sense of humour. :P Of course you will find certain references to British culture that will go straight over your head if you aren't familiar with it, but I really don't think there's anything 'to get'. Some people just don't find The Office or Peep Show funny, but those people suck.

I think it's just different tastes...like how I like rap, some people like heavy metal. Personally, I'm not a fan of British humor either.

Pretty much, although the Brits have a fair amount of slapstick themselves. It's just that they throw in a lot of dry wit as well whereas American humor is more direct.

I'm not British, and I'm not entirely certain what you mean by "British Humor", but in my opinion humor is humor. You either get it or you dont. And if you don't get it, then no explanation will ever make it funny to you.

The thing with the humor of Japan, is it's like american humor but smaller and more efficient!

If you are going to cite Benny Hill as the paragon of British humor, you'd need to pair it against an American equivalent. I'd say Love American Styl3 is a fair match for it.

Personally i dont think you can really discribe british hummer as one thing, i mean on the one hand theres Monty Python and on the other hand theres The Office. Franckly theres such a wide range of humer from Britain that anyone should be able to find something they like and if not then there just not looking hard enough.

The humor is more melancholic and "intelligent" (don't know if that's the proper way of saying it).

It's generally about failures. We like to laugh at people who gets stomped by fate really hard and completely fail to dig their way out of their problems.

You should watch:

  • Monty Python
  • League of Gentlemen
  • Peep Show
  • Harry Hill's TV Burp
  • That Mitchell and Webb Look

You're missing out if you have not seen any of them. The only show I find funny from America is Scrubs, but that's it.

Agreed. I'll pop in Brass Eye, The Day Today (or anything Chris Morris related aside from Jam… unless you enjoy your comedy rather twisted).

Not to over generalise, however it's perhaps a little more self-deprecating in nature and a little more subtle. One of the reasons Monty Python changed the face of comedy is because it wasn't condescending – it wasn't broad or low brow which defined much of the comedy in the 60's. That's been perhaps one of the signature definitions of British comedy (not all – cue Benny Hill) ever since (cue the Office).

I don't think the entire comedic output of a country can be described as being just one thing. Perhaps it is because I'm British, but I really don't see why our comedy would be hard to appreciate. Some cultural references and terms would go over foreigners' heads, but that is no serious obstacle for American programmes shown over here (of which there are a considerable amount), and I see no reason why it should be any different the other way. To be perfectly honest, I find that the vast majority of programmes I consider exceptional are British, (Dad's Army, Fawlty Towers, Blackadder, Yes Minister etc) and I'd only place the Simpsons (before it was ****, obviously) and Futurama in the same list. I suspect this might be due to the fact that there are only six episodes in a British series, while there can be over 20 in an American one.

British humor tends to down play jokes. A common theme is to have a ridiculous situation but pretend like everything is normal.
