I'm listening to Instant Karma by U2 (originally by John Lennon, for the very few people who didn't already know). It's good, but not nearly as good as the original.

So it got me thinking. What are some songs that are much better than the original version?

I dunno if I'd say it's better but Emperor did a mighty fine job of Bathory's A Fine Day to Die.

For Once In My Life by Stevie Wonder (faster upbeat blues)

That song from Wham cover by Taylor Swift

That other song that cover by a guy I forgot his name but he did it way better.

And the song that was old but the Ink Spots made it better.

Bear mcReary is pretty awesome. Has a lot of rabid fans though, who really do a disservice to him, or at least have in the past. Still, that cover is very good. Dunno if I think his is that much better, but it's certainly very good.

Green Day's cover of A Quick One While He's Away. Given how much I love The Who, I was surprised by how underwhelmed I was by the original.

While I don't tend to like Metallica, I find a few covers/remixes of their work are pretty awesome: Enter SandmanCreeping DeathBattery However, the best cover I've ever heard is Antony's version of "If it be your will" by Leonard Cohen

Feeling Good-Muse (Actually was voted the best cover ever in some poll)

The Metro-System of a Down (I think the original flat out sucks, yet this cover is one of my fav SOAD songs)

The Man Who Sold the World-Nirvana (Sorry Bowie, I mean no offense but I feel they just took this song about 10 levels higher here)

Where Did You Sleep Last Night?-Nirvana (Kurt's vocals are absolutely chilling in this song)

Opeth-Remember Tomorrow (Honestly, I don't like the original Maiden version at all. I think Opeth really makes this song amazing)

Seether's cover of Careless whisper, simply because there wasn't really much to upstage in the first place.

Pendulum's live cover of Violet Hill

NIN's cover of Get Down Make Love

As for Johnny Cash's cover of Hurt, I wouldn't say it's better or worse than NIN's. Johnny's cover was so heartfelt and emotional to the point where he changed the original meaning of the song for himself, making it somewhat of his own. Neither version is really better IMO, because they both represent a different part in a man's life, and that's why Cash's cover is so great.

Just listened to it. While it is good, the vocals just kind of ruin it for me. That guy has nothing on Rob Halford's vocals.
