I am not sure what cult classic really means, but go ahead and post what you think are cult classics.

1. Phantom of the paradise

http://alexandrosegade.files.wordpress.com/2009/12/phantom_of_the_paradise_ver1.jpg

Rocky horror picture show is nothing compared to this.

2. Ravenous

http://www.impawards.com/1999/posters/ravenous_ver1.jpg

One of the best dark comedies ever.

3. Igby goes down

http://dansiella.files.wordpress.com/2008/09/igby.jpg

4. Wet hot american summer

http://www.thecinemasource.com/moviesdb/images/whasposter.jpg

This is the dumbest movie ever made. It even has fart commentary on the dvd. Yet it is also genius. Try and figure out that logic while I go fondle my sweaters.

5. Down by law

http://globalfilmfestival.blogs.wm.edu/files/2008/12/down_by_law8.jpg

Tom Waits is one of the best musician actors ever.

6. Red rock west

http://movierate.org/pic1/Red%20rock%20west.jpg

7. Repo man

http://theexpiredmeter.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/10/repomanvideo.jpg

8. The adventures of buckroo banzai across the 8th dimension

http://thizzfacedisco.files.wordpress.com/2009/10/buckaroo_banzai_x.jpg

This movie has a plot somewhere, but I can't remember. It is nuts though. Watch it.

9. Flash Gordon

http://www.impawards.com/1980/posters/flash_gordon.jpg

Hell yeah!

10. Harold and maude

http://www.artful-living.org/images/harold_and_maude_dvd_lar.gif

11. Defending your life

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41Q9NQZZ5ZL.jpg

12. Heathers

http://bluemoviereviews.files.wordpress.com/2009/08/heathers.jpg

Remember when Christian slater was in good movies?

13. Barton fink

http://unesemaine-unchapitre.com/public/barton.jpg

The Coen brothers best and weirdest film.

14. Delicatessen

http://myqueue.files.wordpress.com/2008/05/414px-delicatessen2.jpg

Cannibalism is hilarious.

15. Welcome to the dollhouse

http://www.impawards.com/1996/posters/welcome_to_the_dollhouse_ver1.jpg

16. Return to oz

http://files.nireblog.com/blogs1/nermeen/files/return_to_oz2.jpg

This movie is trippy.

17. Pink floyd's the wall

http://www.filmposters.it/imgposter/grandi/pink.jpg

18. Near dark

http://www.blouzefest.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/near-dark.jpg

19. They live

http://www.superstarsarena.com/pictures/movies/they-live-1988.jpg

20. Better off dead

http://thepilver.files.wordpress.com/2008/09/better-off-dead.jpg

21. American Psycho

I think it means a film that wasn't too popular in theatres, but became popular later on dvd or vhs. I could be wrong though.

My pick would be Fight Club.

It comes on AMC all the time if you haven't seen it.

My picks are more popular than yours, but they certainly didn't get the attention they deserved: Fight Club, The Cable Guy, Dumb and Dumber, Training Day? I'm bad at this :(.

Training day was pretty popular and it won an Oscar so I am pretty sure it doesnt count. I think the others do though.

Great choice. Michael Pare has always been a pretty underrated actor and I love the songs in the movie. Wilem dafoe was a great villain.

Oh I love that movie!:D I watched it a few months ago as it suddenly came up on one of my movie channels and I was surprised how much I still enjoyed the "timeless" little film. Gosh I wish they had it on Blu-ray but oh well.

if...! What a great film. Highly recommended! This was the film McDowell did right before A Clockwork Orange if anyone cares. I've heard the sequel to if... is also very good. It's called O Lucky Man! I think it's pretty hard to find too.

Here are my additions to the list:

A great post-apocalyptic film from the mind of Harlan Ellison.

Great visuals and trippy animation. I love this sci-fi film.

"The penis is EVIL!"

Pretty cool B movie, based on a comic book.

I agree with most of the recommendations in this thread, but here are some other great ones:

Scanners

El Mariachi

Re-Animator

Hard Boiled (don't really know how "cult" this is, but certainly not a major success)

and my personal favorite: (predictable, I know)

The Big Lebowski

Serenity (Firefly the show it's based has more of a cult status though imo)

Garden State (with Natalie Portman)

Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas

The Program (old football movie)

Ong Bak The Thai Warrior (Tony Jaa)

Kung Fu Hustle (Stephen Chow)

Half Baked

I could be wrong on these but they're classic to me.

Man bites dog, and the ruling are probably two of the best dark comedies ever. I actually prefer the 80's version of The Blob though. If you like those two films you should check out these great cult films.

Kind Hearts and Coronets is one of my favorites. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang is so underrated, both Robert Downey Jr. and Val Kilmer were so awesome. I remember I use to watch Serial Mom a lot when I was very young because it always played on TV, the one scene I remember is when she killed that one lady with a meat loaf which I thought was hilarious.
