Here's some great news to kick off your week with ... the 28 Days Later franchise thus far has been nothing short of killer with two rock-solid installments. We just got some really interesting news regarding the third film in the series.

Dread Central has learned exclusively that the director of the original film, Danny Boyle, is planning to return to direct the as of yet untitled third film in the franchise. Details are scant at the moment, but we're working to get some more for you.

Both 28 Days Later and 28 Weeks Later told the story of what happens when a rage virus gets loose in the UK, turning its hosts into maniacal pissed off killers. Sort of like zombies but not really. Look for more on this exciting bit of news as we get it!

UPDATE:
For those wondering, this news has come from Boyle himself. The director indicated to a good friend of our site that "there's another 28 Days Later in the works." When asked if the title would be 28 Months Later, Boyle replied "In theory, yes." Immediately the next question was if he'd be producing, to which Boyle responded, "Actually I want to direct it." There you have it, kids. From the horse's mouth.

Great news. 28 Days Later is one of my favorite movies. I enjoyed the second as well, but it just wasn't as good as the first. Hopefully with Boyle working on this one, it will turn out to be really good.

Great news... I loved 28 Days Later. I liked 28 Weeks Later well enough, but I am definitely glad to hear Boyle will be making a return.

Hell yes! Lets see how awesome this next installment is now!

I gotta say, 28 Days Later just might be the best zombie movie ever made. The only ones that compare IMO are Rec and the Dawn of the Dead remake.

I liked both movies but I never like when zombie movies go all "established, clean city", sure, you know it's gonna get overrun, I just find all that safety boring most of the time :/

Does "I want to direct it" mean "I will be directing it?"

Or does it mean, "I'm still interested in directing it, provided that I don't get tied up with a more interesting project later"?

Awesome. Both films were good, they weren't anything stellar (I watched both again recently) but they were definitely unique. I preferred 28 Days solely due to the focus on the characters more than the action... but I hope the third film bridges the gap between the two.

What would a prequel even be about? 90 minutes of a chimp sitting in a cage?

28 hours later from first contact within a major city? The main character trying to get the HELL out of there maybe?

The first one was great, but the second one was just terrible. Everything the characters did, I just wanted to yell at them for being so damn stupid. Also, it wasn't at all scary, except for the part with the night vision. I hope the sequel improves it.
