My friends and I always argue about this, nine times of ten it's just jokingly. Is there such thing as dark black? I say yes, but I have some friends who disagree. I have some proof, but not all believe in the magic color of dark black. Do you think that dark black is real or that black is black and that's it? I'm just curious of how many people are smart enough to see dark black as an actual shade of black.

Proof

Discuss.

Black is black. Other shades are merely greay.

Neither of the two are actually colors.

So..if you see two black shirts and one's a little more faded than the other, it's not black anymore?

Black is simply every colour in the spectrum, if it's not then it's grey. So really there's no such thing as light-black, only pure-black

Technically black would be 0/0/0 in RGB... anything else is just a shade of gray... :P

They're still the same color, just that the ink in one of them has washed out over time.

To the judging eye, though, the faded one would look greyish.

....... or...... "faded black," I suppose.

That depends.

Subtractive colors (paints, inks, dyes), darken and turn brownish, greying, and sometimes blacking when colors are mixed.

Additive colors (light, RGB), brighten into white as more colors are added. Look at the Dark Side of The Moon cover art.

I guess you could come in here and try to sound smart by saying some science fact, but if you saw either of those colours beside the dark black anywhere else, you'd say they're black.

No.  Black is the absense of light.  You can have more absense of light than absense of light.

Absence of light applies to additive colors in terms of shade.

And he's fairly right, black has it's limits.
