'Dead' baby wakes before funeral

A premature baby declared dead by doctors at a hospital in Paraguay was found to be alive hours later when he was taken home for a funeral wake.

Jose Alvarenga said he had discovered his son was alive after he heard crying from the box in which he was placed.

The baby is now back at the same hospital's intensive care unit and reported to be in a stable condition.

The head of paediatric care at the hospital said a doctor had not properly checked the infant's vital signs.

"This is a very unusual case," Ernesto Weber told the AFP news agency, adding that an investigation into the incident would be carried out.

A doctor who works at the hospital's maternity unit said staff had tried to revive the baby for an hour before declaring him dead.

"His pulse was so low that it was undetectable," Aida Notario said.

According to medical records, the baby weighed only 500g (17.6oz).

The smallest on record was an American baby who weighed just 280g (10oz), born at less than 22 weeks.

Wow. It's parents must have been pretty happy to hear it was still alive, and pretty mad at the doctor for making them go through hell.:?

I don't even want to try imagining the relief those guys are feeling.

This is one experience I hope to never go through, thinking my child is dead.

Well the parents can't blame the Drs they couldn't detect the pulse with equipment what could they do? :?

This apparently was very common back before people knew how to check for pulses. People used to be buried ALL THE TIME when they were still alive. That it is still coming close to happening today doesn't surprise me.

thats so horrible. im glad the baby is alive though. i cant imagine the pain of going through losing a child.

did you even read the post?

the whole problem was that the baby was veary weak from a physical standpoint (500g? the average weight of a newborn is 3kg iirc) and a had a very low pulse on top of that, the doctor/probably also the machines simple didn't pick it up

can't realy blame anyone in this scenario

Can you imagine how pissed those parents must be? They came this close to burying their child alive.

Well they should get quite alot to raise their child from the malpractice suit
