Such a shame, this guy was doing great work.
However, he stated that if anything should happen to him a document will be released with all the information he had, things that haven't even been posted yet. Like a full list of active spies and addresses.

Sagem28

Wouldn't that be considered blackmail?

It is blackmail.
But if it's either that or your life I think the choice is made pretty quickly.

Well then if anything further gets leaked....they have him on another count. Doesn't seem to be the wise thing to do.....

[QUOTE="jediknight52501"][QUOTE="testfactor888"] Well according to your narrow view of reality I guess I am a terrorist living in the US. I support Assangetestfactor888
i don't support the attack on Americans or the Military, i had family serve and i am against Assange and Wikileaks.

I don't support the attacks on anyone but for me freedom of speech and freedom of the press are some of the most important values that this country should adhere to. People like GTA_fan999 are the ones who make me ashamed to live in the US and wish I lived somewhere else most of the time.

There is no absolute freedom...

Agreed. A lot of people seem to think the Bill of Rights is absolute, but SCOTUS has set limitations and exceptions to free speech.

The Bill of Rights and the US Supreme Court don't exactly have jurisdiction over foreign nationals though, do they? And even if they did, isn't the impetus here to prosecute the individual who made the leaks, not whom the leak was made to?

Perhaps some countries, yes, but not in Australia, the nation of which he's a citizen. There he's broken no law vis-a-vis Wikileaks.

[QUOTE="testfactor888"] For what crime did Assange commit that Holder could have against him that would even allow him to be extradited in the first place. Make a concrete case to how you think an extradition could ever happen of him to the US. State the laws he has broken.topsemag55

It's hilarious how the left in OT want Assange to go free, yet Obama wants him tried.

U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder said Monday the Obama administration was considering using laws in addition to the U.S. Espionage Act to possibly prosecute the release of government information by WikiLeaks.

This means they will use the Espionage Act, the United States Code, plus any case law. It won't be hard at all.

But don't worry, we'll give him a lawyer, since PayPal froze $80K - damn, PayPal is so cool to have done that.:)

All Holder has to do is draw up the charges, and make a formal extradition request to Sweden. Sweden will do it as long as we promise not to strap him to Gumby.:P:lol:

I wasn't aware that every liberal here in OT supports Obama.

People that don't want it shut down are hoping enough information gets out so to make US security more vulnerable to foreign attacks. If you ever talk to someone that supports Wikileaks, be assured that this is their main motivation for supporting Julian Assange.

I support Assange because he is exposing the corruption in the U.S government and the people have the right to know, seeing as you support the government so much and not the people, clearly you must be Anti-American, just like the terrorists.

Lol! What corruption? It's a bunch of diplomatic gossip.

Personally, I think Assange is an attention-seeker. At the same time, I don't think he's that big a deal, nor does he carry all the blame in this. If you're appalled that this material got out, then be mad at the person(s) in the government/military who gave it to Assange. If Assange didn't publicize it, some other wanna-be celebrity would have.

In regards to what he's doing, I think there's a middle ground when it comes to secrecy. People, organizations, and governments have to have secrets. You cannot have governmental integrity while also having complete transparency. Now, as to whether or not Assange has crossed the line, I really don't know. I haven't conducted a serious survey of the material on Wikileaks, and I don't anyone else in this thread has either. I've heard in the news that some of the material released could be used to identify local operatives in the Middle East. If so, that's irresponsible.

This. 100%

Which is a diplomatic way of saying they have nothing to charge him with. The Australian government have not cancelled his passport, they have not formally charged him with anything, the Attorney General of Australia has even said Assange is free to return to the country. The only reason they've not come out in his defence is because the Australian government does not want to rock their relationship with the USA. The same reason they didn't demand the return and trial of David Hicks; because they knew under Australian law, they had nothing to charge him with.

That's kind of the point as well. Assange is one of the only public members of Wikileaks; his role seems designed to act as a lightning rod for the controversy the group is bound to attract.

The guy is an attention whore. I also am not a big fan of illresponsibly releasing classified documents. Maybe a lot of the stuff is harmless, but if even one undercover operative or soldier in the Middle East is put at risk over this, then it sure as hell wasn't worth it in my opinion. I come from a military family, so I guess I see things from a different perspective than a lot of people, but anything that puts our troops (and those that work for the various intel agencies) at risk I'm against.

[QUOTE="GTA_fan999"]Rape charges are the least of this creep's worries now. He has put the lives of every American and countless others around the world in danger. The real reason people support him is because they want to see more attack on the United States, much like on 9/11. Now is the time to draw lines in the sand and stand on the side of terrorism (Assange) or freedom (United States).

If you honestly believe that the United States stands for freedom (at least in this more recent time), you are one of the many naive Americans that is blindly driving this country into the dirt. If you were pro-freedom, you'd be supporting Assange and his activism for FREEDOM of speech and FREEDOM of the press, not the oppression against it... It's the mass of people that think like this that make me want to turn my back on the United States and actually hope for its collapse.

Depends if the British give him to the Swedes to be honest. And then of course whether or not the Swedes give him to the USA (which I suspect is part of the reason the sexual assault charges were resurrected.) I suspect the whole turning himself in routine was an attempt to weaken the Swedish case for extradition from Britain.

I doubt he would release that kind of information. I'm pretty sure the US govt would kill him to prevent that from getting out (or have him shipped off to a black site in the middle-east and never be seen again).

But I wouldn't blame my leaders on that, the first amendment is not unlimited.

It makes me sad that so many people on this thread seem to think the US is this horrible pathetic excuse for a country. We're not perfect (nothing ever has nor ever will be perfect) but I still think this is a damn good country. Despite some mistakes we make sometimes, there is a reason people all of the world would LOVE the opportunity to come here.

If he does that, then he's crossed the line. Now he's a real enemy, and I would propose executing him and shutting down the website. At that point, he's not covered by the freedom of press or speech.

not really

"Blackmail is the act of threatening to reveal substantially true information about a person to the public, a family member, or associates unless a demand is met"

its the opposite, hes doing it in case something happens to him, so it dosent fit with the definition of blackmail. Its safty precautions

Don't get me wrong, I am strongly against this action !

However, I understand why he would do it. He said it's his life insurance. This information was never posted to protect the individuals whom it may concern, such as spiesand also military personel. Should he get killed, an encryption key will be released to open this document and making it public.

It's no different than if somebody gave the Nazis the plan for the Normandy invasion and all the secrets of the allies during the war.

It you support Assange, you support terrorism. That's what I will tell everyone that comes to his defense.

Every one of your posts gets more and more inane though I will admit that at the same time they are quite comical

I can only imagine the wonderful impression you're making on people.

That depends on what's in the documents. I haven't read them and don't plan to, but if he is releasing information that puts US soldiers, undercover operatives or civilians at risk, then what GTA_fan999 is saying is pretty much true.

What's been released so far hasn't been strategic or tactical information though, mainly diplomatic cables.

[QUOTE="conistant"]Wait wait wait wait. The guy got arrested cause he didn't use a condom???????ayanami_rei
Apparently, it's because the condom broke and the woman told him to stop, but he wouldn't, so he's being charged with rape/sexual assault.

Man that guy just breaks all sorts of protective barriers.

. Like a full list of active spies and addresses.

If he does that, then he's crossed the line. Now he's a real enemy, and I would propose executing him and shutting down the website. At that point, he's not covered by the freedom of press or speech.

Why do people think that shutting down the website will do anything. If it gets shut down 10 more will take its place. Once its started it will never be stopped

That list will only be made public in the case he gets harmed physically.

Danm_999

If this is true, it just shows him for the scumbag he is. There is NO reason why undercover agents who serve our country should be put at risk because of whatever political or personal agenda this guy has. I don't see how anyone, no matter if you support Wikileaks or not, can support this sort of blackmail.

According to everything I've read, the 'insurance' file contains cables about Guantanamo and BP. Not a comprehensive list of active agents and their addresses. I think we're getting into the realms of paranoid speculation here.

Ok it's still early...BP as in BP oil or does that stand for something? If the whole spy thing isn't true, then I'm happy. I'm not really sure what he can release about Gitmo that people don't already believe anyways.

It can't be stopped I hope you should realize that by now. Take 1 down and ten will take its place. Take 10 down and 100 will take its place. Especially now with how big Wikileaks has become it can never be stopped. Its like piracy websites. No matter how many they take down it can't be stopped and just keeps growing

You get the concept of shutting something down and 10 more taking it's place? That if you shut those down 100 more will take their place. It's like world governments are virtually powerless to stop infringement of copyright and intellectual property online.

There are ways. Cut off the funding that's going to those websites, make our security better, and charge those that are connected to the website. It will be considered a felony. Of course, thsi is assumign that they're releasing information that is underming our operations in Afghanstian, or Iraq, or wherever. Not stupid diplomatic gossip like Wikileaks. We're not powerless, you know.

From what I can tell yeah though I don't know if its about the company in general or about how the US government handled the spill. No real idea except that the name was mentioned when they were talking about what was in the "poison pill" (another name I guess they are giving the insurance file).
