Metal, as a genre, has good music (if you look past the generic, repetitive bands), but as a subculture of people, it's one of the most pathetic and laughable. They're so obsessed with image and being "non-conformist", that they spend more time whining about sell outs and "mainstream" than listening to music. It's not the only genre with a terrible subculture (rap is guilty too) but it's one that often seems to get looked over by people, when it's deserving of a lot of criticism. Many metal fans are some of the most selfish, unfair and downright ignorant people you'll ever meet.
As for Metallica, they have some really stupid fans, a lot of those "SELL OUT! LONG HAIR IS METAL! YOU ARE TRAITORS" eejits I hear at every corner of society. For me, I don't give the slightest crap if Metallica wanted more money, it's of no consequence to me, and to try and take a moral highground is ludicrous. Why does anyone actually care what Metallica do for money, or why they "change sounds"? I don't pay attention to bands themselves, I listen to the albums and the songs, that's it. Lars Ulrich seems to be a bit of an ass in real life, but I don't give a crap about that, I dislike him because he's a particularly average drummer, at odds with the other members, who I think are very talented with their instruments.
And overall, I don't give the slightest crap that the Black Album is more "mainstream" and not as "metal", I'm not obsessed with image, I in fact, like the songs on that album more than their earlier albums, so the Black Album is one of my favourite albums of their's, I don't like St. Anger's songs very much, so I don't like the album, but I don't like Kill Em All a whole lot either. People shouldn't judge albums based on how "mainstream" they are, they should listen to them with an open mind, and make their judgement based on the album's own merits. if you don't like the style, just say it, don't try to make up some pathetic reason like "they cut their hair! they're not metal!".
