Dark Tranquility is classified as death metal? Add that to my list too then. :o Mind change... I forgot DT is melodic death metal. :P Also I'll have to add A Javelin Reign and Novembers Doom (havn't heard Novembers Doom? They're near identical the the style of Opeth).

they only co-created a whole sub-genre of it...

I'm more into thrash metal. The only death metal bands I listen to are Venom, Amon Amarth, and Dethklok. If anyone has bands they think I should check out, then I'll gladly do it. (please, none of the necrophiliac crap)

Actually, I'm not talking about brutality. I'm just saying it's extremely low quality death metal with a lame gimmick and attracts scenesters. It's a bunch of meaningless technical death metal riffs put together with some egyptian theme.

GodLovesDead

:|

Study music theory did you?

It's not hard to see which death metal bands are completely full of it these days.

I could see you saying "meaningless technical Dm riffs" about Necrophagist, but not Nile. There are many people who would strongly disagree with you, including me. Their riffs are solid, just technical enough IE nothing wanky like Necrophagist. If you don't like them fine, but don't call their music "meaningless technical DM riffs put together" because it's just not true.

I asume you're reffering to Cannibal Corpse's Necropedophile? the gore based DM bands aren't supposed to be taken seriously, a lot of it is toungue in cheek, and when it's not, it is either metaphoracle, or just brutal lyrics to go with brutal music

I don't really know if these are death metal but:
Arch Enemy
Kataklysm
In Flames
Children of Bodom (the older songs from Hatebreeder)
Behemoth

And those are all the bands I listen to. :P But then again, I don't know what they're classified as so don't hurt me! :P

I only recently got into Death Metal, but my favorites would be Amon Amarth and Bolt Thrower, but I really don't listen to much more, I haven't found the time to really check out much more.Bloodaxe726

Thats what I started with, now i also listen to Dying Fetus, Opeth, In Flames, Soilwork, Strapping Young Lad, Unleashed, Scar Symmetry, Krisiun, Nile and Meshuggah (although some of the bands I only have one or two of their songs)

tocklestein2005

They were considered the extreme fringe of Heavy Metal, but they never crossed over into full on Death Metal.

Basically the rule for Heavy vs. Death Metal is - if you can even SLIGHTLY understand the lyrics being growled or screeched without a lyricsheet, it's not Death Metal.

I can understand most of Bolt Thrower and Amon Amarth's lyrics, and some of the lyrics of other bands, and the clean vocals in Opeth of course

I love DM, too many bands to list. I prefer old school death metal over newer, technical/br00tal death metal. Everything sounds so generic nowadays. My local scene is saturated with uninspired, boring deathcore bands that are passed off as brutal, but are really nothing more then a bunch of scene kids trying to be a part of the next underground muscial trend.

That's not true. There are several Death Metal bands that you can understand the lyrics. Newer Napalm Death, the vocals have gotten clearer since it left the Grindcore genre, so does Carcass, Death, Bolt Thrower, Amon Amarth, and Unleashed, just to name a few.

Slayer was never considered DM (although they had a huge impace on it, as well as Black Metal), but Sepulturas older stuff (Beneath The Remains, and Arise atleast) were kind of a Death/Thrash hybrid.

singing involves more than vocal chords, and anyone knows that singing a song and growling/screaming and fake low voices(as in outside of their natural range) is different. The same can be said about falsetto, which I despise for the SAME reasons. sorry, but I prefer people with quality voices that dont fake their own vocal chords to sound like death or a girl ;)

attempting to sing outside their vocal range is faking. The point where normal person's voice crack when making noise ie unnatural noise. Remember that in real life all death metal singers sound different than studio made tracks ;)

Faking? Dm vocals can be done without any effects or mixing btw. Is throat singing fake or unnatural? After all, the sound comes out of a human being.

It's actually quite possible to achieve the low growls without studio assistance. Sometimes during live shows, a vocalist may cup the mic with his hand around his mouth--Frank Mullen used to do this when Effigy was recorded--to achieve a lower sound than what would be heard naturally, but that's about as far as "faking" goes.

@taalon- the ones Ive heard do, and they were good ones.

@Epak- It can be done, but not well. Thats why I dont like it. throat singing is unnatural, as you are making noise to sound like words, it is sound yes, but unnatrual human sound ;)

@Keel- I actually see that, but sometimes they screw up, and cant even do it decent for half a song. Some guys can do it better than others, but it is still unnatural human voice, and what you hear on CD isnt what they produce live. Show me one guy that does a perfect growl/scream for a whole song with his voice actually being in that range he is "singing" in, and I more than likely will like it :)

I have, and I know how they do it...it's technique. There's certain ways to do it where you do no damage to your throat. If you do it throaty, you'll ruin your voice. George Fisher would be an example, just listen to him talk.

I agree Meshuggah are fricken awesome. I is one of my top 3 LPs but obZen is rarely off my stereo.

Somebody mentioned Psycroptic, they are also a favourite of mine I saw them in Edinburgh 2005 or 6 when I was starting to get into serious Tech Death but they already had a stand in for Chalky =( They played Colour of Sleep t'was bangin. Visceral Bleeding are also really good Tech Death as is the Canadian Martyr.

Domination Through Impurity are awesome Brutal Tech Death but Brutal DM is my favorite really, love Debodified and Poppy Seed Grinder. Origin make me giddy.

[QUOTE="Clampdown79"]I think this fits into the prog-metal genre more, but Mehuggah are an incredible band. They're rhythmical geniouses.MissLibrarian

I agree Meshuggah are fricken awesome. I is one of my top 3 LPs but obZen is rarely off my stereo.

I agree Meshuggah is amazing - glad they tried to mix it up a LITTLE off ObZen. Though they definitely aren't death metal.

The only true death metal band I listen to is Cannibal Corpse. I like some deathcore and melodic death metal type stuff, such as Job For A Cowboy, Dying Fetus, Arch Enemy and Opeth.

The only death metal band I've really heard of was In Flames and they're alright.

never seen them, but I stick to Melodic Death Metal and Thrash Metal. which In flames could be both if more songs were like Take This Life.Premier1101
In Flames is probably one of the greatest Swedish melodic death metal out there. Taken from Wikipedia: In Flames is a melodic death metal band from Gothenburg, Sweden and is considered to be a pioneer of the melodic death metal genre, along with Dark Tranquillity and At the Gates.
