[QUOTE="NiKva"]

I don't like death metal. If I can't understand the lyrics, then it's probably not the genre for me.

CosmoKing7717

I have never understood how someone can listen to music like this without reflecting on how wrong it sounds. If you are focusing on the literature aspects of music instead of the actual music/aural qualities, then doesn't that just indicate immediately to you that you are clearly doing something wrong and not listening to great music? Lyrics just seem so unimportant and restricting at the same time when it comes to music, where the focus is supposed to be on the actual sounds being made...at the same time the lyrics in music are still not close to reaching the heights of actual literature in most cases.

I don't think that it's such a terrible position so long as it's not the only thing the listener in question is looking for. Sure, great sounding music is important - Hell, I'd even say it's the most imporant thing - but the right words can help bring a song with phenomenal musical qualities to an even higher artistic level.

It's goooooood.
- Wonderful technical musicality especially concerning the drums in particular and the guitars.
- Endless proper-good riffs pouring in one after another.
- It has a tone and genuine agression to it that you just can't get elsewhere music-wise, as in, when I'm in the mood for death metal only death metal scratches that itch.
I personally love me a bit of death metal (especially brutal death) for mainly these three reasons.

[QUOTE="foxhound_fox"]I used to be an anti-advocate for the "growl" genres of metal, calling it un-musical. Now I'm knee deep in groove metal with Pantera and Sepultura and finding myself wanting faster, harder and stronger music every day. Like all music, it is an acquired taste... but DAMN does it blow traditional styles of rock out of the water. Well, at least for me. And I say to anyone who calls it un-musical: "A pox upon thee!" Because it most certainly is musical... just in a non-traditional way. Much like rock-and-roll was to music 60 years ago.Celldrax

Tis the truth. There's a reason why metal is often compared to cIassical.

Cacophony is the first word I think of when I hear death metal. It's just a jumble of dissonance, the musical equivalent of a dentist drill.

To each their own, I guess (and yeah, Gamespot won't let me link either, it's annoying). None of those are pleasing to my ears, mostly due to the vocals.

It's also a mood thing, too, as I enjoy speed metal and other stuff, but I have to be in the right mindset otherwise it just gives me a headache.

Well I'm not saying that you have to like any of those, my point is that "dissonance" and "cacophony" don't appropriately describe a lot of death metal.

death metal and screamo are my 2 most hated genres and whoever likes them should be put to death for being a disease to societyDr_Yeezy_3000

I have a feeling you couldn't name a single actual screamo band.

As far as death metal goes I enjoy some old school Cryptopsy, Suffocation, and Death. I'm also a rather large Grindcore fan. Good music if you're in the right mood.

You listen to one band, make a bunch of generalizations, and think you can lambast a whole genre.

Yeah, posting in this thread is a lost cause.

Death metal is awesome. It's an acquired taste, but once you get a feel for it you realize that the musicianship and songwriting is superb and hard to match in other genres. Suffocation, for example, is *too* good at what they do.

I could never handle any pure genre of Metal, it either has to be wacky like System of A Down or progressive like Dream Theatre. Exceptions would be Megadeth and Metallica.

The big turn-off to death metal is the vocals. If some of them would just learn to sing instead of vomit on the microphone, more people might listen to them and *GASP!!!* enjoy them.

I wont be the guy who tells you to turn it off, but I wouldn't listen to it voluntarily. I like emo/hardcore bands a lot more. Sure they still scream nonsense sometimes but the chorus's usually even it out. Plus, I think if you scream properly your music should give off more energy.

Completely defeats the point of the music. Clean vocals wouldn't sound half as good in the place of death metal vocals. Clean vocals have their place, just not with the death metal mindset.

Yup. Thinking that death metal should have nice clean singing is about like expecting that opera should have vocals in the Nashville twang style.

Lol I remember you from the other topic saying you can do dm vocals. It's perfect for the music, it shouldn't be done any other way, and it's a lot harder than "vomiting" on the mic.

OrkHammer007

By that logic any instrumental song ever written is also no good. What about classical music? Instrumental blues and jazz? Which by the way blues and jazz use virtually the exact same playing style and composition as metal, just taken in a different direction. Your line of logic would also apply to any rappers that speak to fast or slurred to understand.

I've always said if you're only listening to the vocals in music, then you're not listening to music. I've also often said Metal is a "musicians music". Typically metal fans are musicians of some sort, this is not a coincidence. It's a lot easier to appreciate metal when you have a trained ear.

Also I need to point out I fire of the names of at least 2 dozen metal bands that DO sing in their music some entirely and some partially, and I would be willing to bet money you (and most others) still have never heard of them.

I see the death-metal adherents miss the point...

You can growl or scream without sounding like you're on a three week drinking binge and need to purge. I'll toss out Dez Fafara of DevilDriver and Mark Hunter of Chimaira as good metal vocalists in this vein. All the mike-barfing does is make the music less accessible... it doesn't make in any way better.

That's not to say that a sprinkling of power-puking here and there isn't okay. Used sparingly, it can provide a bit of shock value. It just sucks when it's through the entire ******* song.

I'd actually prefer the music if it lacked vocals. Some of my all-time favorite songs are instrumentals. You don't need someone "sounding angry" to convey the emotion if the music is written properly.

I've honestly never really thought of low guttural vocals as sounding angry. But with german thrash metal in particuler, I think the vocals sound somewhat more angry then what they do in death metal......and they're not exactly puking into the microphone ;) I personally think they compliment the music quite well. You can't really have death metal without the vocals.....because that's the whole point of it.
