Well on a more serious note, I get annoyed when people make so many spelling errors, like on here for example.

Ex. The thread had too posts.

Really, these kinds of errors just mess up the sentence. Do you guys personally get annoyed at these spelling errors?

How does that example mess up the sentence? Give me another example as to what it could mean. Getting annoyed over that kind of thing is ridiculous

Yea, it really does bother me. If it's because they are just young and ignorant, then it's not their fault, and I have no problem. But most of people who make grammatical and spelling errors seem like they know it but just don't care, and that bothers me.

All I'm saying is, it's not "ridiculous" to be annoyed when people make grammar mistakes. I make them all the time, it just annoys me when I see them. I can't help it.

I've passed elementary school and I make mistakes like that all the time. Of course I usually go back and correct them, but I'd assume someone as intelligent as yourself could easily understand what the other person is trying to say

Depends how bad the person's grammar is. If they can get their point across then that's fine, one or two errors makes no diference. What I really hate is when people type with extreme short-hand. An example would be "dude wtf I nvr said ne thing about ur gf wtf r u getting mad at me 4?"

Not at all, this is really just a forum to have fun not a forum that everyone must be good at grammar. As long as I can make out what they are saying then all is cool.

The TC's example really doesn't bother me two much...(see what I did thar! lol)

I just don't like it when you can tell someone just doesn't care. If you make some mistakes oh well, that's life, but some people feel they are still IMing. I mean come on this is a forum, not Instant Messenger...You have all the time you need to make your post.

I am not a grammar Nazi by any means though. (since I make quite a few errors myself)

If it makes the writing difficult to understand, yes. Typos are one thing. They don't make what you write incomprehensible. But people who butcher the language really should learn how to write properly. People aren't inclined to take you seriously if you can't even spell most of the words in a simple sentence correctly.

Nope, i could careless aslong as i can make out what they are saying itz all that matters to me. i know i will never be an english geek because itz not my language to master. besides itz overrated (unless you plan on being a writer, give speeches and stuff like that). once some of you youngins start working in the real world you'll see what i'm talking about.

i always found it funny when ppl try use the english language as a form of intelligence. using words with the same meaning but phasing them in various ways displays nothing but dialect. ish speaking of word play, i work in a industry that takes the english language, turn it into slang and make billions out of it. As long as I understand what they say.. Why should I be bothered?

Though many teen girls here in Portugal write in a way no one can freakin' understand for christ's sake.

Like "Eu gosto de comprar preservativos!", which would translate to I like to buy condoms, they completely destroy the phrase and say it like "Eu gxt dih cmpr prxrvtvx", and I just go "WTF?!".

I would guess it's because you dismiss good writing, which does require intelligence. It's one thing to tolerate bad writing, but quite another to hold a belligerent and dismissive attitude towards good writing. Whether or not it's true, bad-mouthing intelligence will instantly win you the anti-intellectual label and put you in the same boat as dimwits that dismiss complex science because they can't understand it, or drop out of high school to pursue an exciting career in the fast food industry.

Even as someone who agrees with your general notion (that language errors aren't especially annoying unless they make the writing difficult to understand), I value intelligence far more than someone's earning power.

i value intelligence too but when you whine about spelling and good writing in a game forum it tells me a whole lot about the type of person you are. i've read thru countless topics here and witness ppl trying to out wit each other with english words....but within all of that mumbo jumbo neither was actually saying anything intelligent. i'm sure you have witness the same thing.

Yep, I agree. But by the same token, I've also seen a lot of people whine and complain about people whining and complaining about bad spelling and grammar. Regardless of how or where you're communicating, how you present yourself is important to how seriously people take your arguments. It's just human nature. If you're reading through something that is sloppily written, you're less likely to find it persuasive. And I think it goes without saying that poor writing often accompanies poorly thought-out ideas, because whether people want to admit it or not, an inability to learn to write properly IS indicative of less developed intellectual abilities. So when it comes to advanced reasoning or complex debate topics, you can almost rest assured that people with a good command of the language will be making better arguments than those who do not - which you can also see quite plainly here in GS OT. ;)

For the record, I always chuckle when I hear people say "this isn't an essay" or claim that they write better when it's for a serious situation. Writing isn't just about mechanics. You can't flick a switch and suddenly become a good writer at a whim if you never practice it. And since many of these people spend a lot of time writing here, why not take the opportunity to practice? NO harm can come of improving your writing abilities. Limiting your writing abilities just limits your options in the long run.

Doesn't really bother me in the slightest to be honest.

People can type how they want to type, I am not in the place to dictate how a person should.

It doesnt normally bother me unless it looks obvious the poster has gone out of their way to misspell words. For example, words like 'dat' instead of 'that'.
