Today when I was going to Walgreens this girl approached me outside and called me over. She wanted to know if I'd buy some sort of Cough Syrup/ Decongestant for her little brother since her parents were out of town the next few days and her little brother was sick. It was one of the ones that you had to be 18 to buy (At least in my State) Anyways I just apologized and said that I couldn't but said maybe she oughta try and find a natural one and ask for one she could buy without being 18. She said she was 16. Anyways she seemed sorta mad I didn't help her and walked off without saying anything. Should I have just bought it for her though? I felt really bad about it, but I guess the reason I said no is that my state is really strict about that stuff. And if they found out I bought it for a minor I could've got in some trouble. Maybe that was me being paranoid but its probably better to be careful. What would you have done? do you think I was in the right or wrong? I need OT's wisdom lol :P

She and her brother are not your responsibility. You shouldn't feel guilty at all. Think of it this way. People are born every single day. Is it your reponsibility to help them just because you can?

I have never met someone who got high off of cough syrup... Personally I would have done it but I can not say no. I would not be upset about it though. I hope you do not imagine her brother dying because you did not buy the cough syrup... I am sure she found someone else to buy it.

I would have inquired more on the condition of her brother and made a judgement call off that combined with her overall demeaner and looks ie does she look like the type of kid who will go home and down the bottle.

Also, people who down cough syrup better society by means of natural selection.

Was her brother with her? from the sounds of it, he sounds pretty young. So if she was in charge of watching him. Why would she have left him alone? especially if he was that sick. Don't feel bad, just mention to take him to Urgent Care or an Emergency Room if he's really worse off

I think you did the right thing. Your average 16 year old isn't going to know or care about the difference in effectiveness between regular cough remedies vs. those that have to be purchased from a pharmacist. And if she wanted it for a legitimate purpose, she would have just asked a relative to buy it for her.

Standing around like a minor outside a liquor store, asking a stranger to buy it for her...no way.

If she actually wanted the cough medicine, she would have just asked the next person to come along, not walked off.

Jackc8

Exactly. The fact that she got mad tells me she was just a worthless druggie. Probably wanted to do some "tussin" in the parking lot.

Not your responsibility. She should ask a neighbor or relative that's in town to help her out, somebody who knows her family. It would have been nice of you to help her I'm sure, and the worst that could really have happened is she went and got high off it, but still. Parents know the rules in their state, they should be the ones she speaks to about it and they probably wouldn't say "Oh well go to the store by yourself and try and get somebody to buy it for you". They'd likely instead say "Call X person [aunt, uncle, family friend, parents' coworker etc] and have them help you".

Even if that leads to a possibility of you facing trouble with the police?

Sure.

In case you haven't seen the references throughout the thread, there is a fad that has been going on for a few years where people mix cough syrup to make a drink to get high with. It's even mentioned by some rappers; Lil Wayne frequently raps about it and several others mentioned it as well.

Chances are she didn't have a brother who needed the cough syrup and she just wanted it to get high. If it was a real emergency there were plenty of options for her to get her brother taken cared of.

It's not worth the trouble buying it for someone since depending on where you are at I wouldn't put it past the possibility of being charged with a felony for giving it to a minor. Good luck getting a job with a felony in this economy.

I know that your intentions are good but there is a difference between buying food for a homeless person or helping an old lady cross the street and buying opiate medication for an underage girl's "little brother". If the "little brother" actually exists, don't you think that taking medication without adult supervision might have a negative outcome?

I'd have done the same. The age restriction is there for a reason, and if she actually needed medical assistance for her brother, she should seek it from a clinic, not from some random stranger. That's exactly what I'd tell her.

You followed the law. That's usually a good way go. Chances are, there was no such "sick brother" anyway. If he was, I'm sure coughing for a few more hours isn't going to be the end of him.

She won't care either when you get arrested, charged with a misdemeanor or felony, and if given a felony your job opportunities plumment to a few that hire felons. All because you want to be nice. I would just tell her to call 911 if her little brother is that messed up instead of breaking the law.

Fact of the matter is she's a minor and would face little to no punishment while you're the one being lectured that you should know better. For all you know if the police walked up she might change her story and claim you was trying to rape her or something so she doesn't get in any trouble at all.

a few years back these guys at least 13-14yrs old asked me to buy booze for them,i agreed and bought the booze and walked out jumped in my car and drove off with their beer.
