Awesome.
OT: I think you did the right thing. Sounds too fishy like she just wanted it to get high or something. Like this guy who asked my dad for some money so he could buy some food my dad said, "Let me walk over to McDonalds and get you a burger", the guy said "I don't like burgers", to which my dad replied "Then you aren't hungry"
I would call BS on her story, her parents are suddenly out of town and left her and her brother all alone? Where was her brother at? Was he with her? If not then she just left him alone all by himself? I understand why you might feel gulity because you don't know if she legitamentlly needs it or not, however I think her story is full of holes.
I probably wouldn't have helped this girl either, though there is a chance I would have if she was crying or something and then I would feel bad. But honestly I think she was probably just some junkie. Plus you could have gotten arrested, and there are always other options out there for people to get medicine, especially kids.
Personally, I think you should have helped her.ghoklebutterThis. It's only cough syrup. Ah I remember the days when I stood outside the corner shop asking people to go buy ciggys for me & they always did - maybe it's the cute face :)

Whether or not you can OD on that isn't what matters. What matters is if you want to risk getting arrested for buying her cough syrup when if her brother really was sick she should have took him to the ER. I would be wondering why her sick little brother is home alone in the first place.
Also, it is possible to die from it, although the original formula required prescription-strength cough syrup containing special ingredients not available in the OTC versions. Still not worth it either way, I'd tell her to call an ambulance instead if her brother's life is really in danger.
