Has anyone seen District 9 yet, if so what are your opinions?
Some have said that it's the best film they've seen all year and in a while.
Is it really that good? I'm probably gonna see it soon but the hype has me real excited.

Oh, I thought it would be more profound than that, like something that no movie has ever done before type of thing.

I have yet to see it but have a question. Does it have the kind of action, special effects and epicness that I can expect from a Peter Jackson presentation?

Actually, I have seen the "humans are bad guys in general, aliens are good guys" setup before in an animated film called Battle For Terra, but it had one of the worst marketing campaigns I've ever seen.

Great movie. In the beginning, it's pseudo-documentary style does a really good job of putting you into the event. It's a really believable series of events that form the backbone of the film. Once it actually gets into it's plot involving the main character it sort of degrades into a standard Sci-Fi action movie, which is a little disappointing considering how great and creative the beginning is, but even then it's a very good action movie that shows off it's action in a very straight-up no-nonsense fashion.

Overall, really cool, and not your standard alien movie.

It certainly has some of the best special effects ever (absolutely astonishing considering the fairly modest budget), and some of the coolest action bits ever.

That seems odd for a Peter Jackson film.

it had only a 30 million dollar budget, thats pretty low in this day and age and considering how great the film is.
A crap film like Street Fighter legend of chun li had a 50 million budget

Would anyone call it a sci-fi classic comparable to The Day the Earth Stood Still for example?
Is the storyline very enlightening?

Well the storyline definitely sets it up for a sequel (epic cliffhanger). Story is surprising but leaves much to be explained in the obvious 2nd movie. Very good movie btw.

My post is basically all spoiler so heads up (I dont know how to make a spoiler tag) -I felt really sorry for the main guy considering he never got fixed and eventually became a full blown spraun or whatever it was they were calling them. The way he went from such a happy goofy guy to how seriously ****ed his life became. -Apparently he wasnt a pro actor and was just some guy they grabbed which is really cool because I thought he was excellent in the movie -Some of the gore disturbed me not simply because it was gory, but because of the reactions that the character took to it, for example when the alien rips that guys arms off and grotesquely killed him like that, everyone was just like "oh ok we'll just ignore that and be on our way" and when they were blowing people up with the alien guns they didnt really seem to be too bothered by it, if sh*t like that was actually going down and you saw some guy get blown up or have his arms ripped off you'd have like post traumatic stress and be messed up hard..Although it is just a movie I guess.

All these posts about nerdgasms is getting very annoying. It was defientlely an above par movie, but it had one to many plot holes and inconsistent plot development/story progression.

Copley was the directors best friend. They both grew up in Johannesberg from what I read in Entertainment Weekly.

It needs to be more emotional. I mean, it's really generally speaking a very sharp film, and even the action sequences are tinted with this attachment to the characters, but I feel fundamentally that it could've been made into a slower kind film. The run-and-gun in the end is good fun and all, but because of it the film doesn't quite live up to its potential. It's a fantastic concept basically fleshed out very well, but I just don't like how much shooting there has to be. I found it very gratuitous, and what's more, that's not really quite what sold the movie to audiences either. Still, conceptually, it's marvelous, just a few plotholes there, and really, I think that the prawns should've been covered more. there should've been more prawn characters; they were made to be very moving emotionally the way they were depicted.

No. His arm is not actually ripped off at any point. He cuts off part of it at one point (it might be like losing a thumb to us, I suppose) and some Nigerians cut it up a bit, but it's never at any point ripped off at all. And dude, haven't you ever read the Metamorphosis or seen the Fly? It's the exact same thing, and really, his fate is terribly fitting since he became the very thing he would basically have abused and damaged had his fate gone unmolested.

He wasn't some guy they grabbed. He was Neill Blomkamp's friend. And he did an amazing job considering this is his first acting gig ever.

That seems odd for a Peter Jackson film.

it was 'produced' by him. Producers do not have much to do with films. the bulk the film's expenses must've been the fantastic CGI, which is all things considered not terribly expensive. makes sense that it only cost $30 million.
I think he was talking about the guy in the beginning that the Prawn that was eating the tire and then ripped that guys arm off when he kicked him or it was when Wikus was in the suit and shot that one soldiers arm right before the soldier was about to kill Christopher.
Yeah, I think they should have focused a bit more on the aliens. I was hoping we would get to know them a bit better and would have helped the audience empathize with them more I think. Overall I really enjoyed the movie though.

I'm surprised everyone is saying this is a low budget movie. I didn't even notice at all. There's tons of action and special effects, and it's considered low budget? Damn, they must have managed their money well.

I really agree with you on this one, especially on your points with the plotholes and prawn characters. Don't get me wrong, I loved the movie. It was a great, although slightly overrated, film that had potential to be the masterpiece many claim it to be.

It was a decent flick. It's no 2001, Star Wars, or ET, but it's one of the best movies this year, and easily one of the best sci-fi films of the decade even though the last third was kinda predictable.

I REALLY enjoyed this movie. Easily the best of 09 along with Moon w/ Sam Rockwell.
Something I thought I predicted:
I thought the aliens were going to use the "fuel" as a weapon and turn all humans into their species.
I really liked how the humans were the bad guys and the aliens were the good guys in this film as well
easily a 9/10 if not a 10/10.

moon and district 9 are (IMO) the some of best scifi movies created and both came out this year!

I don't think anyone will compare it to 2001 (or at least I hope not.)

The person who played Wikus was Blomkamp's friend but he also is a producer. Copley helped produce the scifi short films which got Blomkamp noticed by Peter Jackson in the first place.

As for whether the film should've concentrated on the aliens more. Yes, it could've but that wasn't what the film was all about. It was really about Wikus and his part in the District 9 event which the film tries to show us. Blomkamp also stated that he wanted to make a scifi action film first and foremost, but as he and his co-writer were writing the script they realized that what they'd written were delving deep into a social message they didn't think they were doing.
