I'll let you know once I see Avatar in 3D today, but so far District 9 is the best science fiction movie I've seen this year.
District 9 was a good, original movie.
Avatar was just Twilight in Space with a buncha pointless action scenes.
That's not the impression I got about Avatar at all..... did you even see it?District 9 was a good, original movie.

I couldn't tell you. I'm staying as far away from Avatar as I did from Twilight...mechworrior762
Why? Avatar looks like actual QUALITY filmmaking unlike the Twilight series... I don't see how the two could actually be compared at all. They are nothing alike and to lump something like Avatar in with that teen angst vampire crap would be a complete insult to James Cameron.
Can someone explain these blasphemous Avatar - Twilight connections being made in this thread?alphamale1989
I don't understand it.... Comparing Avatar to Twilight is like comparing thanksgiving dinner to a trash can filled with feces and bile.

This guy didn't see the movie, he's trolling, ignore him.
And no, district 9 was spectacular, but avatar was better.
They both were had good things going for it but district 9 was the best movie I have seen in aLONG time.
Can someone explain these blasphemous Avatar - Twilight connections being made in this thread?alphamale1989Because both movies have romance I guess. But Avatar is far better than Twilight. Comparing the two is an insult to one of the greatest directors of all time, and who has never been wrong about calling a movie innovative and/or revolutionary.
I'm not saying Avatar is ANYTHING like Twilight (How the hell would I know, I didn't see either), I'm just saying I will be giving it just as wide a bearth. From what I've seen from the commercials, it looks like total crap. You're trying to tell me that a bunch of BLUE (Yes, blue. Almost as bad as sparkly vampires) indiginous people are going to mount an effective resistance to a fully mechanized army? And from what I hear it sounds like they are throwing some "romance" in there too... I may have totally missjudged what I've seen in the adds, but TBO I'd rather watch Terminator Salvation again. Post apacolyptic warfare FTW. And was District 9 any good? I thought it would be another crappily done SF movie that looks cool in the adds but sucks in reality.mechworrior762
You simply CANNOT judge Avatar from the trailers. The trailers do not do it justice. It is a fricken awesome film. To simply not watch it because of the (crappy, ill agree) trailers is dumb. Watch Avatar (in 3d), it will blow you away.
And yes. District 9 was awesome.
I couldn't tell you. I'm staying as far away from Avatar as I did from Twilight...mechworrior762Missing out on one hell of a film.
I was too creeped out by Kevin Spacy's voice as the robot. Waaaaay to mellow.I agree, but Moon was better than both:P

My ill informed friend I would suggest reading the reviews on RottenTomatoes or Yahoo movies instead of just going on what the commercials suggested to you. This movie is looking to nab quite a few golden globes this year and even the negative reviews I've seen for it have been only minorly negative. But you seem kinda likea Transformers fan anyway. All explosion, no substance....
And District 9 was one of the best science fiction movies of the past decade IMO, to answer your question there.

District 9 even with all its problems like the thinly valed focus on racism and the current situation in africa is still one of the best sci-fi movies I have seen in recent years. Avatar is...well its good I wont say its not, but at the same time it borrows so heavily from other sci-fi movies that I cant really call it great. Normally I would not hold getting inspiration from what came before against a movie, but Avatar was supposed to be this epic event. James Cameron has supposedly been thinking about this movie for 10+ years and I dont know maybe thats true but that doesnt make this movie any better. It actually makes it a bit more disapointing. The hype was thru the roof and I feel the movie did not deliver. I hope you notice that I do not speak of the whole 3D aspect and thats becouse seeing the movie in a IMAX theater enchances the experiance but it does not make the movie better.
Moon shouldn't be even compared to the two. Moon has a subtle quiet mood. Avatar and District 9 are action sci-fi films. They're not exactly in the same field.I agree, but Moon was better than both:P
Film-Guy
while i thought both were great i'm gonna tip my hat to avatar which captivated my imagination like the sci fi films of my childhood
Seems like that's happening to a lot of people with Avatar. So many people I've been hearing that it really brought them back to 1977 when they saw Star Wars for the first time. Sure that might not have the same effect on everyone, but it's at least coming off that powerful for quite a few people.while i thought both were great i'm gonna tip my hat to avatar which captivated my imagination like the sci fi films of my childhood

Good point, I was just comparing because they are both sci fi films. You are quite right though, a better comparision would be Franklyn but I dont think many people know that film.
