do boxers lift weights or do they build muscle from hitting the heavy bag and such?
This topic is locked from further discussion.
they DO lift weights, it is fairly common for them to pump iron a few times aweek, I do think however that they build up thier bodys differently then (say a bodybuilder) since too much mussle is a bad thing in that sport, you have to have the mussles you need, to hit hard, and such, but any ecess is discarded, and not trained.
the excercises may differ somewhat, altho I am not sure if they are different, of boxers just focus on a more limited range

Not all of them lift.
They tend to prefer body-weight excerises. Many do lift weights, but not too excessively. The idea being that they'll put on too much muscle and slow themselves down. Intelligent weight lifting is fine though.
they lift but unlike bodybuilders they arent striving for a completely ripped bod.
if youre a huge behemoth of muscle you cant dodge punches or even throw one.
Yeah, but lighter weights and high reps( kinda varies by weight class). My trainer likes doing around 150 on bench (3x sets to failure) and shadow boxing with 5lb weights. Back workouts on occasion and such, and a ton of core work. Leg press is also good and tons of jump rope. The way they set up our workouts are in "rounds". Usually 5min per exercise. So 5min doing bench to fail, 5min heavy bag, 5 min speed bag, 5 min of incline abs, 5min strech jumprope... etc.
Well it depends on the Boxer's weight class. I know all boxers will do a mix of weight lifting, cardio and conditioning but i dont think they implement weight lifting as one of the major factors of their training as boxing requires a lot of technique and endurance but it really depends on the boxer.
This thread is bollocks.
An elite boxer will lift weights but only compound exercises to build total-body explosiveness. They don't waste time on muscle building or mass gaining exercises because it's not what they train for. Boxers train for explosive strength and to get that, you need to lift heavy weight with low reps whilst keeping a low body fat. Beginners will usually learn bodyweight calisthenics for basic strength and endurance. Strength training will make you gain strength, and a limited amount of muscle to accomodate those strength gains; Along with their low bodyfat, that is why they have good cut-looking bodies. Mass training will make you gain muscle mass and limited strength because of the tearing of muscle fibres and the recovery of the Central Nervous System to adapt to that stress; Something that boxers need to avoid and work on their technique and discipline instead.
