Considering that they have to live with other psychos, I don't think it's too easy in prison.

I think we're way too nice....people shouldn't want to go to prison, but most criminals i've talked to (my dad's a lawyer, it's not like i walk around interviewing convicts) really just think of it as free room and board for a while.

The big thing with a lot of prisons is to treat the criminals with respect and they will respect you back. Also a lot of wardens across the country believe in trying to help the prisoners get a second chance. You also need to think of the job of the guards. These activities help keep the prisoners mind at ease, thus not starting any trouble. I am not saying it works 100% but still. Also it is still prison and it is still hard regardless of what they can do in there.

I think that prison is still an unpleasant place to be, but I think it's getting nicer and nicer (with more privileges, that is) as time goes by.

Prison is not meant to be a punishment, but a rehabilitation centre. Having access to television and internet is a little much to be honest. Criminals aren't put in jail to be "punished," but to be given the idea that what they did was wrong, and to turn them into productive members of society. You can't do that unless you give them access to some resources that allow them to learn new skills and grow as individuals.

Most prisoners should be rehabilitated, but that doesn't mean they should live in spas. I find the prison system ineffectif, but that doesn't mean I think they have it easy.

I'd get rid of the Internet, but otherwise I don't think your system is that lenient. Prisoners need an education too, and it's not like they can make any college money behind bars. . .

I think these services could keep them from becoming (more) insane. Complete isolation of all kind from the outside world doesn't do much in terms of rehabilitation.

It really depends on where the prison is located...i think criminals should suffer..they should regret their actions and wish to never do them again..

I still think we should be giving out lashes instead of prison sentences that are less than 3 months in duration. Therefore this would apply to petty crimes

it sounds decent when you list off the few things they get in a favorable light. However when you factor in that they get a limited time with all of those things (besides the tiny cell) if they get any time at all that is and you factor in the showers and the inmates they have to live with (who I hear are not the nicest people) and the fact that they have to do whatever they are told to do I would say they do not have it so easy.

If you are so curious, why won't you try to survive for one week in prison. I really don't believe prison is at all easy.

Prison is not all about punishment, how ever poor of a job our prison system is what it is meant for is to rehabilitate and reinstate people. Basicaly "Correct" them.

"The degree of civilization in a society can be judged by entering its prisons." - Fyodor Dostoevsky Russian novelist (1821 - 1881) Prison should be unpleasant enough that nobody wants to go back, but not so barbaric that it reflects badly on the country running the prisons. Things like how common prison rape is are often used as jokes (and can even be funny depending on context) but they are also (or at least should be) deeply embarrassing things about the U.S. I don't see a lot of people lining up to try and get into prison. Therefore I can conjecture that criminals are not particularly eager to go there.

The_Last_Ride

Well if someone is going to be released, I think it's only reasonable to try to minimize the damage that prison will cause them. When people are in prison for crimes relating to drugs and poverty, it doesn't make a whole lot of sense to say, "here's what we're gonna do...we're gonna **** you up even more, then release you back into society in 7 years." If they're in an even sorrier and desperate state when they get out, then what good did it do to imprison them in the first place? All you've done is put them with other criminals who'll teach them how to be better at crime when they're released.

So yeah...if giving criminals educational opportunities helps them to change their lives, then do it.

Also when it comes to stuff like entertainment and recreation, that's far less "necessary". But you have to understand that prison is extremely dangerous for both the guards and the inmates. And bored violent felons are more likely to say "I think I'll go stab a dude". If giving them limited entertainment opportunities keeps them from acting out, then do it.

Im under the impression that jail is supposed to help reform them/ contain them. Sure this is going overboard, but criminals shouldnt be caged up all day and tortured. IMO, people want criminals in jail because they want them to be punished for their crimes. Its like revenge on the criminals. But, jails shouldnt be there to make sure that so and so suffers because so and so wants him to. They should be there to try and keep society safe, whether that means reforming the criminals or locking them up for a very long time. Punishing the criminal for the sake of punishment or "justice" (meaning revenge) isnt going to change the past. Jail should do what it needs to do to get the job done, and if that means holding them until they die or trying to change them to be "society friendly" then so be it. But, giving them internet, tv and stuff is a little too much. those arent necessary for them to live. If they need entertainment give them a ball and a basket or a book to read... not something expensive that takes away from taxpayer money.

in some respects yes.

I definately find it amusing/ironic that criminals seem to have better fundamental "rights" (health, dental, education, etc) than free people do.

Say what you want, but the fact that rapists, murderers, and other criminals have better healthcare than I do just makes me sad.

I never get why people think the job of prisions should be to simply pnush people. Sure you can make a prisoner stay in a windowless 6 by 6 cell for 'n' years, but I bet when they get out they won't be thinking of how they can become productive members of society

Actually prison is a form of criminal punishment. It is not meant to heal criminals, it is meant to deter people from committing crimes. Rehabilitation is more in corrections, rehab facilities, etc... And since it is a way of punishment, I have to disagree with you about the extra commodities.
