My family tips. In Italy, most places you pay for the table, the cutlery you use and the napkins (this is silly..) but instead you don't have to tip. I've also been to some places in Germany where they did the same, because people rarely tip. In Denmark, it's custom to tip, but you don't have to. You usually tip 15% or so of the total price of the meal.Deihjan

Eh? I've been living most of my life in Denmark and I've never tipped.

It's normal custom to tip.. Really. Waiters are some of the worst paid positions, unless you've actually got the waiter education thingy that lets you write on your résumé that "hey, I can clean tables, I've got a degree". You should always tip, unless the service was lousy as hell, and the food was crappy.

In my experience, North America is really the only place you tip. I think it's because minimum wage is much better in other places in the service sector.

I tip, but it depends on the country and service. Always wise to check the guide book to see how the tipping culture works in that spesific country.

I can't speak for all European countries, but most of which I've visited uses tips. Some tip for good service* and some because the waiters needs it.
*(Not sure this is state policy or fromrestaurant to restaurant, but I believe some uses a standard tip that comes with the bill.)

Like people said before, it's more a "keep the change" kinda thing.

I sometimes tip in restaurants if the service was good. It's more of an extra for the waiters though, they actually get paid.

Interesting.. Never thought why I tipped. I just tip since its what I grew up with. Tip the barber, the waiter, the taxi, etc. When I was in Japan if you ate off base you don't tip since it was considered rude. If they worked on base japanese seemed to love it.darkfox101
You never saw that as sorta discriminatory? Why tip some jobs and not others.

What you mean? If it was on base they were kind of in "our area" running our services. Fast food, barber, etc. So we tipped. Off-base was just different.

I'm from Sweden and I usually tip if I've recived good service throught the entire evening. Not if I'm going to a place for a burger and a beer.

I think most tip when they have had good service and/or enjoyed the meal. Tips in European countries i know are simply bonuses and do not make up for their salary, so there isn't so much of an expectation to tip if for instance, service was lousy. I think it makes sense, personally because you should only really reward people for doing a good job, or trying at least.
