Truer words have never been spoken.
Just so I'm clear on your viewpoint, if someone lives in their grandma's basement rolling around in their own poop while sucking on broken glass-but they are ultimatly extremely happy...thats a winner? If they are genuinely happy, yes. Keyword beinggenuinely.
[QUOTE="comp_atkins"]people who are REALLLLY good at things generally have to spend ----loads of time doing it. at the expense of other aspects of their lives. this holds true for nearly anything.spazzx625+1
Yeah, I'm sure at the time many considered Einstein to be a loser.

Lol sorry, and don't worry about it.I do have some social skills, but my biggest thing is that I am shy.I can't just walk up to a girl(or anybody) and start talking.I am in High School,by the way.
Son, I'm loving life right now. I have awesome friends and an awesome family. So, I am not failing at life.
But I will also woop your ass in Madden.
We all fail at life, none of us live forever.double_decker
We tip toe through life only to arive safely at death.
LOL no not recently. The game that got me thinking about this subject was Ms. Pacman. I was actually watching a documentary on netflix called "Chasing Ghosts" about those guys at Twin Galaxies in the early 80's. I started playing Ms. Pacman back in college between classes. My friends and I would always try to beat each others high score. Since then I've always wanted to master it and maybe get the world record but then I see these guys and how socially dysfuctional they are and I think if thats what it takes then maybe I'm better off just being a normal person and average at games.I'm going to assume you recently played an online game and got absolutely battered.

No offence, but you do not really come acrossas a normal person.

How could I be offended? You know nothing of me.Well, in today's society one is a winner when he makes a living on the things he enjoys to do while still being socially accepted.
I have no doubt that it's possible to be a winner in the video gaming world. However, success in video gaming is extremely difficult to achieve due the the massive amount of people participating and huge time investments of many people. One is better of doing actual sports like football or soccor.
Happiness is the highest form of wisdom. People expect me to be a skirt chaser like my dad but that doesn't make me happy since it was that line of thinking from him that ruined his relationship with my mom. I've decided to live my life for myself instead of trying to please everyone else...
'fail at life' is a vague term really... Fail, financially? Spiritually? Socially? I think that everyone should do what works for them. If playing video games for the majority of the day is the only way someone can find fun and happiness - why not do that? I'd rather be a happy, fulfilled average-paid guy, than a depressed and socially isolated judge / professor.

I fully agree. The really sad part though, is how intolerant other people are of the fact that there's certain people that don't care about what's expected of them and will do whatever they want to be happy (provided that they aren't harming anyone else.). It was this attitude that's caused me a lot of personal problems with other people.
Well, if you spend 10 hours per day playing video games, that may take away from successes at other things.

there are people that find some things to be so fun, like going to the club and trying to get laid. It just bugs them that others don't feel the same way as they do[QUOTE="DaBrainz"]Just so I'm clear on your viewpoint, if someone lives in their grandma's basement rolling around in their own poop while sucking on broken glass-but they are ultimatly extremely happy...thats a winner?HubadubalubahuIf they truly enjoy life as it is and are truly happy then yes, their life is better then any one of us working jobs we absolutely hate just to get by. Of course if your mooching and ruining other peoples lives to selfishly fuel your own happiness that's not a winner in my eyes. but to each his own I guess.
This.
I find the idea that "winning at life" is anything other than doing what you love with as little negative impact on yourself or the world quite laughable.foxhound_fox
This.
No, that straw man is silly and you are silly. While I do not agree with the, OP. His point isn't exactly higher math. There are things you can "win" at that do not take hours of practice every day.by that logic, everyone who wins at a particular thing fails at life

I love how people point out any logical fallacy that they find. Think if people did this in real life conversations or debates...Yeah, you failed at picking your target here. This is probably the first time I used that term on here, hll. I agree the fallacy sh*t is annoying.by that logic, everyone who wins at a particular thing fails at life

From my personal experience, no. As someone from the fighting game community, most pro players generally have jobs, make money and look healthy. Lets look at the pro American players like Filipino Champ, Alex Valle or Mike Ross. If you see them in videos or steams, they seem really happy playing their games. They look healthy and it seems they are enjoying their games and their current life. If you look at the fighting game community here in the west, particularly America and Canada, you have players from all over both countries competing in offine tournaments around the country. Tournaments like Canada Cup, the Ceo gaming tournament held in New Jersey, NorCal and SolCal tournaments in Calafornia and the biggest one of all and probably the biggest one in the world, Evolution, which is held and located in Las Vagas, Nervada. All of them held once a year. Players from around the country play in these tournaments, they meet other players and become friends with them.
Let's look at Japan, where arcades and fighting games strive. Daigo Umehara, the world's most renowned Street Fighter player, flies to America and participates in American tournaments. He won Evolution 2009 and 2010 and was top 8 in 2011. In Japan, he practices in arcades every once in a while with other players. Recently, he went around the entire nation of Japan to promote the dying arcades. He is also married and has a son and currently works as a male nurse. In Japan, it is considered a social activity when going to arcades. Fighting game players regularly hold ranbat tournaments monthly and get money (for example tachikawa aracades, gameacho, gamechariot). They meet and greet other fighting game players and respect other players.
The fighting game community is a very SOCIAL community compared to the other genres. We don't like playing online. We usually meet in a specific location and play offline. We are friendly towards other players and even new players (as long as they respect you and don't do anything stupid). We are loud when we see something "HYPE." We are supportive of other players and respect them. Although we get a little salty when playing somethings, we are a generally nice community.
No, pro gamers who can sustain their lifestyle just with gaming aren't 'failing at life', more like winning completely. Better than having a 'real' job.InconsistancyGames don't hold much fun when you're playing the same maps for the same game 12 hours a day for 3-4 years. Also a lot of them do not make good money, a large amount of tournaments don't pay out properly and a lot of the big Korean players basically work in gaming sweatshops.

I've been playing L4D since it came out and I still find it fun. I'm not even paying attention to the zombies anymore. It became a reflex. They could be bunnies or unicorns. I just shoot everything that moves and doesn't have a blue nametag above their head. It's entertaining since I play it with friends and we're chatting, trolling each other and trying crazy stuff. People have the wrong idea that the skilled players are 'fat nerds that sit in front of the pc all day'. As I've said previously, being able to actually think while playing gives you a huge advantage while lots of playing without thinking won't lead anywhere. To actually improve in a game you must be able to detach yourself from it and plan ahead. It was quite a huge revelation for me. I used to be tense and focused on the game and panic when the action got rough. Now I've learned to keep my calm and it all feels like it's in slowmotion.
