At least in California, we do hand out free diplomas to idiots. It's literally 8th grade math and English to pass these exams.

I have had to do that multiple times when the power goes out or something. I have two bachelors and getting a masters. When you're in a zone doing specific things; communicating with doctors or nurses, checking prescriptions, making compounds, sometimes you get caught off guard when you go to the cash register and it's like another part of your brain is dead and trying to start-up again. I can't explain it but it happens. Once I feel like a dumbass and help the first customer it's all good and the basic math skills come back again.
On the other hand, she may have lacked the skills and you suffered because of that. In that case, damn the school, damn the diploma and damn the system!
1. The girl works at McDonalds. Cut her some slack.
2. Everyone is not as naturally gifted at basic arithmetic as you are. Some of us are better at other things. We all have strengths and weaknesses.
3. As a society(as a planet really) we need ways to separate the wheat from the chaff. If someone can't do basic arithmetic, maybe they belong at McD's and not a rocket science program. She may be placed at the ideal place for her competency.
4. That job is DIFFICULT. Someone gets an order wrong; the cashier takes the heat. Restrooms are dirty...it is the cashier who has to initially deescalate the situration. They have a tough tough job with very little reward. CUT THEM SOME SLACK.
To be honest when I worked my first retail job I was very confused when a customer first did this to me. Not because Im particularly stupid but because it was the first ever time someone had put me in that position and I was unsure exactly why they had given me note and coin. Prior to then it had never occurred to me that the customer might prefer a particular type of change over another. Again its not necessarily stupidity or incompetence but a lack of experience. The cashier in your example will now be more prepared for the next occasion this happens.
Id also like to add, based on my retail experience the vast vast majority of payments take place on debit and credit cards id factor in the possibility that most of this cashiers time is spent handling card payment, and probably very little cash...might explain why she was so stumped.
Also the company I work for has explicitly stated previously that cashiers are only advised to give correct change based on the notes the currently hold, or to refuse to "give change" if it is not part of a transaction. This is due to a number of scams that use the guise of "asking for change" as a way to extort money from inexperienced cashiers. Im fullly aware you were not doing this but its possible this had crossed her mind and she was simply being overly cautious rather than ignorant.
@br0kenrabbit: Why give her the extra dollar? Why not take the change from the 2 bucks? Or give her exact amount?
Technically of speaking, back in my days in High School, teachers in my school did a shitty job at teaching us, not all of them, just poor at the teachings. Where I come from, back then, there was this thing called the cheating scandal, meaning they didn't care who failed in our final exams, everyone passes, and they handed out our Diplomas like it was nothing to us. So to your story Rabbit, there's more to this then what you say about schools just handing out diplomas. To be honest, Math isn't for everyone and that's the hard part in school, even I'm not that all bright when it comes to math, basics are simple but adding big numbers can be a pain in the butt depending what your doing of course, I'm just pointing out that Math isn't easy for everyone.
Also why are you eating at McDonalds? You're gonna get fat if you keep on eating them Burgers.

Yeah, gotta admit the first song was funny. This one (Angel) is downright cringeworthy - and not funny.
Take selfies with that friend and post it on FB saying, ''I caught Taher Shah in America''. lel
Stopped in at McDonald's a few hours ago for a sausage biscuit (cause yuk McDs burgers) on my way home: $1.35
I pulled two $1 bills from my wallet and laid it on the counter and said "I think I have change" as I reached into my pockets. The cashier took the two ones and rang it up, and then I threw 35 cents on the counter.
She was dumbfounded.
I pushed the 35 cents toward her and said "I get a dollar back".
She reached into her pocket and pulled out her cell phone and started doing some maths. Then she reached in her drawer and gave me 30 cents.
It only took me a second to realize what she had done, and I real life facepalmed right there. It took a manager to get some very simple math done.
How are these people passing school?
I worked at a place that provided technical support for hardware and also software support for the POS software...99% of the people I spoke with about hardware or software issues were ignorant about all of it.
Out of those 99% of people, 90% of them were nice, friendly and generally willing to help with whatever needed to be done on their end to help correct the issue at hand.
About 10% of the people were rude, mean and unwilling to help.
That means 1% of the people were actually intelligent when it came to computers. I had one site that some how fucked up their cabling and LAN. Everything was down and the lady that I was working with was clueless about it all. After about 30 minutes of having her trying to find things and trace cables I asked her if she knew of anyone working that has any kind of computer knowledge. I got a young man on the phone and he said he's home for the summer and doing networking administrator at school. I literally gave a "Hell yes!" response and he started laughing. I told him the issue and after 5 minutes he came back to the phone. He had them back up on the network and he told me what he had to do to fix things.....this story is one of the oddities that someone useful was on the other end.
The stores that have no one useful and can't follow directions, when their system was down and the registers weren't working....they couldn't do math to save their lives.
I had stores actually telling customers that their system was down and they had to close and would usher people out.
I've also had stores where the manager was getting irritated because none of the employees could figure out tax or even knew how to work a calculator.
I've had stores where I had to walk them through doing basic math and how to add tax (you'd be surprised how few of these stores actually knew the tax rate in their area) to the sale.
Without a calculator, most of these people wouldn't even bother to try and do the work. They'd just close doors and wait until a local tech could be dispatched to fix their issues.
Majority of these people working are high school aged or just in their early 20s. So many of them can't do simple math, especially without a calculator. How they plan on getting by in life is beyond me, but so far they made it this far in life.....

Hey fellow IT brother I feel you.
I may blow things out of proportion here on OT but I do people watch a lot, and a lot of people really are just floating through the motions. I don't understand how people can live and not contemplate. From blocking aisles in the grocery store to yelling personal details through their cell phone in a waiting room, they just seem to lack an awareness of self and environment. It's almost like they never developed theory of mind.

I have to do my grocery shopping during non-peak customer hours. I get pissed at all the people around me that don't give a flip about the others that are there and I become rude to them. Carts in the middle of the aisle (I'll move their cart far away if they're not paying attention and the cart is not currently attended)....talking on their phone while they are getting checked out or at the deli trying to order something (I've snapped at people to hang up or f'ing move)....or they realize they don't want something in their cart so they just shove it on some random shelf (regardless if the item is perishable or not) - a couple of times I've been able to sneak the item back into their cart when they weren't looking (I'm sneaky like that).
I used to love going to movies with the wife. Last movie that her and I actually went to see in theater was The Soloist (so yes, it's been many years since her and I went to a movie) because of the shitty people on their phones, talking loudly for no reason during the movie or just being asshats and throwing things at other people.
To those that don't know any better, I try to teach them. When they don't want to learn or listen, I can't understand why. Now, maybe I'm growing more bitter as I get older....maybe a bit wiser, even.....but I notice that people younger than me tend to assume they're owed everything, that they're special and can't do anything wrong and feel they don't need to be held accountable for their actions. I'd have to say that's my one fear of getting older...most people younger than me are getting dumber.
I digress too much so I'll just stop here.

THIS is some funny shyte. Still I kinda agree with @bmanva. Some of the employees may be idiots. Some may be apathetic. Chances are a little of both. I bet they figure they aren't getting paid enough to figure stuff out without a register so why do it. That requires initiative. As for the sales tax...can't they just look at the bottom of ANY receipt somewhere in the store?

They're coddled. They've not had a callous in their life. Blame the hippies.
See, when the hippies grew up and got into professions, they took that "love and flowers" shit with them. Everyone gets a ribbon, everyone is special (explain that oxymoron) and everyone just needs a hug.
You don't get brilliance without competition, and kids just aren't allowed to compete anymore because that means someone will lose and they might cry.
She doesn't sound too bright but give her a break, she works at mcdonalds. Can you imagine what a soul crushing, mind numbing experience that must be? I have nothing but sympathy for them. In a perfect world that job would pay $50 an hour and I still wouldn't want it.
They probably can't get a better job because they are overwhelmingly dumb.

Man, give them hell when they don't work and still give them hell when they do work. Poor people can't catch a break. Not everyone can be a genius, the world needs ditch diggers and janitors and even fast food workers. They have my respect for working a difficult job. I raise a toast to the working poor! The salt of the earth!

Doesn't have to be. Some of us would like the world to progress beyond that mentality but we are held back by the rest of you that seem all too content to look down on those you perceive as beneath you. Could you kindly get out of the way?

It never will. That's how the world always will be and pretending it doesn't doesn't do you any favors. It just makes us all aware that you're quite delusional.

I guess the same could have been said back in the days of the monarchy. The poor will always be poor and no one will ever rise above the cast they were born into, you'd be crazy to think otherwise. Then The French revolution happened. Or the days of the Spanish inquisition. Not long ago in America Black people were slaves and women didn't vote. Don't be a part of the problem. Get on the right side of history. Aim for the best possible situation. Why fight progress?

People can rise up with hard work or intelligence.....acting like everybody will eventually be equal is just denying basic human biology.
I'd also like to add, is the progress you're fighting for actually just regression?

I agree. Now will you give those poor people rising up and working hard at mcdonald's some respect? They are clearly putting forth a huge effort by even working there. What does looking down on a person do for anyone?
edit- "I'd also like to add, is the progress you're fighting for actually just regression?'
No, I want to push for the elevation of the quality of life of all human beings even the poor, especially the poor. Since we have never had a better time period for humans at large in our history it wouldn't be "regressive". If we had then I would be happy to be regressive and then from that point onward be progressive. God, isn't the right fond of the word regressive these days!
