What do you people think.

I think yes, because never in history has mankind been able to get their hands on pretty much any kind of "information" for free before the invention of torrent.

To moderators: I am not encourogingor endorsing the use of P2P and torrents, so please do not close the thread. This is for statistical purposes only.

Torrents came after usenet, and are heavily inferior to usenet.

Usenet is full of information, torrents are all idiotic pirates stealing things.

There's way more information, less stolen stuff. By information, I mean actual information, like scientific discussions and theory.

*sigh* The Nobel Prize is meant for things that changed humanity as a whole for a long time, in a very positive manner. The person that discovers cures for debilitating diseases should win the prize, not a bunch of internet pirates.

ITT: ignorance.

Torrents/P2P networks DO NOT mean piracy, but a great sharing method, much superior to the old server ways.

Bands make their albums available for free on P2P networks (NIN, Radiohead), demos and applications are being delivered by their developers like this and many content delivery systems start using this technology because it's really faster and has many advantages. Even games start using P2P technologies for multiplayer connections.

Nobody in what huh? I have no idea what you are saying. The creators of MP3 music shouldn't recieve a nobel prize either. In any category. If there was a technology nobel prize the creators of the MP3 and the creators of P2P wouldn't win either.

So then you think they should win the Nobel Prize for physics? For what reason?

You obviously just looked at the title of the article and posted it.

From the article:

"The prize was awarded for work on magnetoelectronics, also known as spintronics.

It uses the spin of the electron to store and transport information instead of the electrical charge, meaning much more information could be kept in a smaller space than before.

Fert and Gruenberg made independent discoveries of the giant magnetoresistance phenomenon, considered the birth of spintronics, in the late 1980s.

They found weak magnetic fields force large changes in electrical resistance. That allows the conversion of data stored magnetically into electric signals the computer can read.

The technology allowed the development of handheld devices such as iPod music players and mobile phones with lots of functions."

The ability to download torrent files over a server that someone else owns isn't against freedom of speach. Sure you may feel like it is but you are using their service to connect to the internet. They can do whatever they want with their service. You can stop paying at any time if you disagree with the service and it will be discontinued and you can go to another service with the same services.

It doesn't matter you're still using their services and they can give and take away said services at will. If a person doesn't like the services witheld then they can pay someone else who provides that service. As long as it wasn't in the original contract.
