[QUOTE="Mochyc"]Yes, sometimes in life you need to take advantage of people to get what you want; it does not mean, however, that you should.SgtKevali

You don't "need to". You want to.

No, you "need to", meaning there is no other way.

NEED TO...no, you never 'need' to Is it easier to take advantage, manipulate, lie, cheat, steal, etc. to get what you want...yes, of course. But some of us choose not to get what we want that way. At least for me, that would take all the honor and fun out of life. -I do not believe that is it 'right' to act that way. And, subsequently, I would not be 'happy' with things obtained in that manner. -also, it (life) would be too easy then...something obtained through challenge and strife is always better than something received from doing nothing But to each his own.

If this is your philosophy, it leaves you none of the usual recourses if someone takes advantage of you.

A mugger or burglar's motivation for stealing your possessions is legitimate in your philosophy; you appealing to the police for assistance, or your insurance company for compensation would not be.

Survival of the fittest, Darwinism. If your among the fittest then great. However, those who can't compete would prefer a more compassionate philosophy.

a really big problem with people in general today is that they become slaves to their desires. and these are very shallow desires, like appealing sexual partners or physical comfort or financial security or physical attractiveness. and this is all for you, just you, the individual. so people are increasingly lonely as they're increasingly selfish. I think that makes sense, but then, all right, what's the alternative? don't buy many things. put other people before yourself. be ok with not appearing the best. sacrifice towards something you believe in. and all these things, even as I'm listing them, to me, sound very corny and outdated. and that's also part of the problem, is the aesthetic: selfishness is cool; this is a tough world and so you too have to be tough to get what you want, which of course you are always entitled to. and the trend is even more towards this until society hits some kind of psychic catostrophy that forces us to change.

That's not a philosophy. A philosophy would be "Sometimes, in order to bring about the best possible outcome, we must take advantage of others." What you have is an observation. If you had the philosophy then no, I wouldn't agree with it.

There is a grain of truth to that. It all depends how you handle it though, and sometimes you have to allow others to take advantage of you in order for you to take advantage of them (harsh as that sounds).

So, using the categorical imperative, you're fine with me taking advantage of you?

Persons who refuse to step outside of their barriers as humans need not their brains. If you have to take advantage of someone, that can be done cordially and in agreement to both parties' wishes. If you're advocating the "law of the best", you don't deserve your conscience or intelligence.

It's only OK to take advantage of people who would do the same thing to you if they were smarter.
