[QUOTE="guynamedbilly"][QUOTE="Snake_raider"]we been around for 2000 years? lol what DigitalExile

2009 years actually. We're just fast learners.

You know, there's a BC to our time scale? That means before 0AD. We have roughly 5000 years of human civilisation, and god knows how many years before that of pre-historic humanity.

Or is that 5000BC? I don't know. Point is, the statement was fail.

[QUOTE="BiancaDK"][QUOTE="Floppy_Jim"]Absolutely, given the size of the universe, how could there not be life outside of our solar system?Floppy_Jim
its still based on faith tho. Reasonable, but faith nonetheless.

That's true. But we humans only take up 0.00000000000001% of the galaxy which is 0.000000000001% of the entire universe. Obviously no-one knows for sure, but I think it's a safe bet that there is intelligent life elsewhere in the universe.

I did point out you were being reasonable ;)

edit: it changed to out

Yeah, more than likely. Who knows how far things go in the universe, it's limitless and there has to be a whole lot of different life out there and they're probably wondering the same to us.

Yes, I believe there is life outside our solar system. The universe is so massive that it would be silly to say there is no possibility for life to exist somewhere other than our solar system.

I do. I think the universe is too vast for us to be the only form of intelligent life.

You also need to take into account the life-span of an intelligent species. This reflects on whether that civilisation is likely to be discovered or not. Our galaxy is approximately 100,000 light years across. That means that for a radio signal (travels at speed of light) will take 100,000 years to travel across our galaxy. As a species, we have only been making radio signals for the last 80 years? Therefore, if there was any other 'civilisations' out there, unless they are within 80 lyrs, they won't even know we are here!

Also, going bac to the drake equation, from our own experience, intelligent species do not come along very often. There has been life on earth for the last 4 billion years. It has taken this amount of time for the first intelligent (technologically advanced) species to evolve! There could have been many species come and gone in that time!

The conclusion you could draw from that is that, intelligent species may come and go and never be fully aware of each others existence! There could be a technologically advanced species on the far side of our galaxy! We won't know for at least another 99,920 years or so!

I hold the position that it's entirely possible that microorganisms exist on other planets. I'm a little less sure about life like E.T.

Well, I'm actually certain.

As for intelligent life, yes I think so.

There's no doubt that there probably is. But it is extremely unlikely that we will ever make contact with other life forms.

I'm not just talking about microbial life I'm talking about intelligent life. E.T. if you will. We've all seen the ufo videos and to be quite honest it could just be technology that our government's are expiermenting with. So outside of the ufo stance and some of the alien videos we've seen on youtube (which are all probably hoaxed). Do you beleif in intelligent life? Other than us of course. Iced_Earth_Rulz
Yep. I have them visiting. They're staying in my basement. :D

Unless they've mastered wormholes. Then they could be here in the next 10 mins.

No doubt. There is way too much space out there for Earth to be the only planet with life.

I think it would be hella cool if we found an abandoned civilization on a planet before we found life.AAllxxjjnn

What would happen if it actually became dead space.

I think so but life might be to spread out to find eachother. The universe is so big that theres bound to be at least one other race of intelligent life. But if you took a picture of the entire universe, then earth is less then a microscopic speck, infact forget the universe it's a microscopic speck in a galaxy. Also we have a very small chance of finding other intellegint life because of how much space there is to look in and that you need to be able to zoom in really close. Radio waves that we generate are said to turn into regular noise in the universe, so radio waves might not be that helpful, espically if you want to listen to them.
