I'm a huge fan of football and mostly all American Sports, and i do think Video Games can be considered a Bonified Sport.I think ATM it's far from it though heres why

Xbox has alot of Pro Gaming Leagues for Halo and Gears , but thats the problem they use 2 differant games, imagine one day NFL was playing Soccer? when a game make a specialized game just for a competition and they can use that certain game for the next 5 to 6 years the VG can Achieve Sports status.

for example, in Madden toruneys the fact they use a differant version every year messes up the competitivness, the best 07 player might not be better than the 06 winner but the 06 winner isn't used to the 07 version, Sports need an equal Playing field.

if they make a Master madden thats the same every Compeition they can make some really competitive Madden Matches an people would practice for months and they can actually track stats.

i think VG will be a Major sport in a few years because it is competitive and not anyone can pick up a controller or KB/M and be good at a game, the sport probally would be Stremed online because i don't see non tech savy people wanting to watch people play games, and it would make sense to have the matches viewed online than on Fox. If ESPN is gonna consider Poker a sport then i'm sure if Pro Gaming Does the right things it'll be on ESPN too.

I HOPE it is considered a sport in the future. It would mean im no longer someone who cant play any sports xD.

Also if you have Sky TV, go to channel 279, its a channel called Xleague TV, and has video game tournaments every day.

I don't believe video games are sports...it's just not right. There is virtually no physical activity which in my mind differentiates between a sport and a competition in some instances. I'm not saying it's not competitive or boring cause i love watching matches, it just isn't a sport. Also i'm not understanding your point about a madden tournament not being an equal playing field. If the game comes out the same time for everyone, everyone gets the same amount of time to practice. If the "06 winner" is truly so great he should be able to adapt to the 07 game.

You clearly haven't seen CS 1.6 pro matches if you are asking for a game with a 5+ year cycle. :|

Halo and Gears as the main competitive sport? No dude. Just no.

alot of you guys saying no way or no, don't understand Basketball/baseball/football al started out as games to pass time, there children games just like Videogames, just back in the day they didn't have Madden so they invented throwing the ball at people. 50 years ago if you asked someone is playing football would make them a millionaire they would laugh. Sports is just Competitve play with Incentive. it takes more skills to be amazing in Halo or any game than play a hand of Poker.

Poker takes far more skill than Halo. There is absolutely no comparison. No video game can compare to the amount of skill required to master poker.

No, you obviously don't know what you're talking about. Poker requires vast amounts of skill. Theres a big difference between actually playing poker, and relying on luck. Relying on luck is barely considered playing poker.

No, all you're doing is increasing hand and eye cordination, and it tells young people that you can grow up to be a pro gamer without an education. It's a bad example in my opinion.

Again, poker has very little to do with luck. The pro won't lose to you. One hand doesn't determine the outcome of the game. When you don't know about the game, you shouldn't talk about it. The hand you described would have barely any affect on the actual game, because the pro poker player knows to get away from the hand as quick as possible. He'd barely lose anything. Probably just the big blind, and that wouldn't hurt him at all.

I guess you could consider it a sport that you dont get paid much for unless your very good at it and they make a tv show on it where many people watch it.

ok your point? it's 90% mental, the brains a muscle. i know it requires less energy, but guess what? NFL hurts people they go home almost dead, this isn't rome, these arn't gladiators your right, it's a more Human form of Competition but you can't deny the fact it's compeitive, it is after all a "Competition" So your telling me Sack racing is more of a sport cause it require energy.

poker is all luck /threadpattyfattycake
How does something end the thread when it doesn't actually relate to the thread's topic? But any way. No it isn't. You probably just suck at it. All the bad players say that poker is luck. if it were luck, the same players wouldn't consistently win tournaments. If it were luck, there wouldn't be thousand page long books describing strategy for the game. If it were luck, some of the greatest mathematicians wouldn't have spent countless hours calculating various mathematical odds to improve their poker game.

[QUOTE="peacebringer"][QUOTE="ChicaQueenWarGa"]No, all you're doing is increasing hand and eye cordination, and it tells young people that you can grow up to be a pro gamer without an education. It's a bad example in my opinion.peacebringer

but if they go on to play in tourneys and win money whats wrong with that? all my life i wanted to play Basketball or Football cause of the sports i played Basketball and football at the park all the time, i wasted my time just like someone who plays games, i didn't get stronger by playing once in awhile it's about mastering it and trying to set goals and reach them, your right if they don't take it serious it's not a sport(same way if i choose to play basket ball in the park doesn't make me an athlete). but if someone masters a game goes in a competition and makes money i'm sorry he's an athlete what else wordwould you use to describe someone who won a Competitive event?

not an athlete if he didn't do anything close to athletic

find the word int he dictionary that describes him then(and i already thought of Loser)

the victor, the winrar, the winner, the champion, but definately not an athlete

[QUOTE="peacebringer"][QUOTE="pattyfattycake"]no! a sport includes a phisical activity exerted by ones self or with a team to acheive a goal... i fail to see the physical activity in playing video games.pattyfattycake

it very Pyhsical practicing for a Competition being up hr's and you hands are the physical part, and Poker is a sport and that doesn't reuire any Physicalness, so your wrong, Sport isn't only Physcial it's mental too, but sports really is about Competitiveness over anything.

maybe your hands but in a sport you must be physical... actually exert energy... your hands do not count... most gamers are fat...

Most of the top CS/UT2k4/Quake players are skinny, actually. I only know a couple of overweight top cs players, and the top 10 wouldn't have any overweight players at all.

uni = university.. "pro gamers" doesn't include the kids that you find at public servers.

compleately irrelevent to the fact that gamers exert next to no physical strenghth during their activity, thus making it not a sport

Random people on GameSpot wont have a clue, whereas if you were to post on a counter-stirke forum or something you'd get better replies than "sitting on your ass aint a sport"

Games like madden ehhh sure, but the most popular is counter-strike and it should be a sport as it fits every single description of sport/professional sport. Also you should know chess is considered a sport, so either make chess not a sport and I'll be happy with gaming being called E-Sports or keep chess a sport and add games like CS to the list of sports.

/Edit

CS has been played competitively for around 8 years and is the most online played shooter.

[QUOTE="peacebringer"][QUOTE="Mumbles527"][QUOTE="pattyfattycake"]

[QUOTE="Mumbles527"][QUOTE="peacebringer"]alot of you guys saying no way or no, don't understand Basketball/baseball/football al started out as games to pass time, there children games just like Videogames, just back in the day they didn't have Madden so they invented throwing the ball at people. 50 years ago if you asked someone is playing football would make them a millionaire they would laugh. Sports is just Competitve play with Incentive. it takes more skills to be amazing in Halo or any game than play a hand of Poker. Mumbles527

Poker takes far more skill than Halo. There is absolutely no comparison. No video game can compare to the amount of skill required to master poker.

poker takes almost no skill... it's almost compleately luck, yes i know what i'mn talking about

No, you obviously don't know what you're talking about. Poker requires vast amounts of skill. Theres a big difference between actually playing poker, and relying on luck. Relying on luck is barely considered playing poker.

no he is right, i worked in a Poker room in Tampa and it has alot to do with luck, but bluffing and reading an opposing player works too, but it has more to do with luck than people want to admit(even though Poker pros on Poker after dark all say lucky has alot to do with it too) it's also about knowing what you have not giving it away by rasing to high. if i'm an average player and i'm playing a pro and i'm delt 2 K's and 1 on the flop that gives me 3 K's and the oponent has a 4 6 how is he gonna beat me? he can't i was lucky and got a good hand. but do ou really think an amazing Halo or madden player is gonna lose to some Newb? thats the great thing about Video game competition Luck has nothing to do with it, it's mostly Skill based. a bad player will get creamed by a good player, but a game like poker if you get lucky even if average with good hands your can win even a pro. alot of those "pro poker players" are compulsive gamblers who got kicked out of LV one to many times.

Probably just the big blind, and that wouldn't hurt him at all.

ok Dismiss the fact a horrible hand can lose the game for you. the other guy doesn't know i have 2 K's in my hand he can be waiting for a straight with that 4 -6 so you obviously don't know about poker. Pros take chances like that against amatuers thats why i said those 2 hands. i've watched many Pocker after darks and "phil Helms" who swears he's an amazing poker player is always losing to differant people cause it's about what you get, trying to outsmart pro pocker players is stupid they know how to play, in a Poker Toruney it's about luck because everyone knows how to bet accordingly and bluff so the best hand is gonna be played right, why do you think theres alwasy a differant poker winner every year? if it was so much about skill there would be some kinda Lance Armstrong record, but there isn't every years it's someone else.

Depends. If you consider something like Chess or Poker a sport, then I would consider gaming one also. If you don't, then I probably wouldn't.
