That won't stop a lightning strike no matter what the ads say, if a bolt can jump through 3 miles of air a surge protector won't be any challenge at all.

Does a UPS help at all?

I know that a UPS is just for when the electricity is out but just wondering.

UPS amke good power conditioner in that they filter out jitter and disturbances so they should improve power quality which can improve sound quality from top end audio equipment. Though it won't protect you from a lightning strike, a lightning strike could easily electrify the whole case, there's no way to stop lightning you can only divert it. Something along the lines of a lightning rod on the top of your house is the only way to divert it.

Ah ok. :)

I was just wondering if you know the lightning hit the UPS, fried it but stopped there without continuing to the PC.

But I guess not.

I guess you dont know how powerful lightening is.. lightening can fry your surge protector and keep going. A surge protector is only to stop small power spikes.

If it's bad enough, where the lights start blinking I'll shut it off. That or when one of my animals gets spooked, like last night.

No, we hardly ever have thunderstorms that bad in New Zealand. Plus, nobody here uses cable and I'm using a surge protector.

I don't, I can't remember the last time I saw a thunder storm. We get loads of rain, no thunder and lightning though.
