Do you eat before you exercise or do you exercise before you eat?

I used to have a big hearty meal to eat first before taking a jog two hours later or so. Then due to various circumstances I ended up exercising first and then eating a meal afterwards. Now I kinda do both what with different meal changes.


Which do you find works better for you? Exercising first usually makes you feel lighter than having eaten a couple hours previously, I always find to be so.

If I intend to exercise, I usually wait 3 or 4 hours after I have eaten. >.>

You're kind of stretching what most people would consider eating before exercising if you wait 2 hours after you've ate. It depends why you're exercising, and what your goals are. I always have a light meal about 30 minutes before hand, usually some kind of fruit. Eating a big meal is usually a bad idea and should be left be for longer periods of time before the exercise(like 2-3 hours).

I'll eat a meal 30-45 min before I lift weights and again right after. Usually it's red meat, fish, eggs, cheese, milk and sometimes oats. Sometimes I'll drink a protein shake with the meal that has a pint of whole milk and a scoop of platinum hydro builder by ON, it was on sale :P

I do not eat before. ...mostly b/c of what time I get there and eating at 4 am makes me feel 'bad'. I do have a drink mix I use while there, and I get some protein as soon as I am done though

I don't eat right before exercise because it tends to make a person nauseous. But two hours before working out, that's probably fine.

After. If I eat before then I feel gross and want to vomit. Supposedly it's best to eat within a certain window after exercising anyways, because that's when your metabolism is working most efficiently from said workout. Although working out is supposed to curb your appetite..That might be BS though, so I should stop reading random articles off the internet, haha.

I don't eat before cardio, but I'll try to have carbs a couple of hours before weights, and always have lots of protein and a fruit or two post-workout.

I don't eat right before I exercise since an intense workout could make me throw up, but I eat before for some energy and after as well. Usually something with protein and veggies or fruit before, then a protein shake or bar after.

If im hungry and i want to exercise. I get the things done first before i eat. I mean why would you eat then workout? Your stomach works faster when you are exercising and with the food in your stomach not blending leads to diare. Lol true story.

I usually exercise about 2 hours before I go to bed, but I'll eat earlier in the day, and after I exercise. I'm in pretty decent health, I think.

Oatmeal + banana + tea then workout 30 minutes later. I always get best results when my energy is high, which is just after a meal.

If it is a small snack, then I eat it and wait about an hour, then go work out. If it is a meal, then I wait 2-3 hours. After working out, I drink protein within 10 minutes of finishing. Then about an hour later I will eat something that has carbs and protein, but as low amount of sugar as possible. I make sure that I am not hungry before working out, because then you tend to exercise less or not put as much effort into your workout because your body needs energy.

I usually get up around 4-5 in the morning and have breaky, mainly something with lots of carbs and atleast 20g of Protein, then i will do a weights workout and have a protein shake straight after and eat a big breakfast with plently of protein and carbs
